SHEET 1. UF 2 FIG.I
WRAlPAlROUND GARMENT The present invention relates to a garment and, more particularly, to a garment of the wraparound type, and especially to a wraparound garment for wear over scanty attire, as over a bathing suit or the like, while walking or traveling through areas where such scanty attire is prohibited or not deemed proper.
lt is an object of the present invention to provide a wraparound garment, of the character described, which may also double as a spread, when removedfrom the body, which may be placed under the wearers body, to lie on, as on a beach or on grass, to protect the body from the ground.
lt is also an object of the present invention to provide a wraparound garment, of the character described, which is of highly simplified construction and may be produced with a minimum of labor and, therefore, at a minimum cost.
it is another object of the present invention to provide a wraparound garment, of the character described, which, when removed from the body, and spread on the ground will be entirely flat and without folds, to provide a'smooth and comfortable reposing surface, and, for the same reason, will be compactly foldable for carrying and storing.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide a wraparound garment, of the character described, which is simple and easy to put on and to secure on the body, and as simple and easy to untie and take off from the body, and which will adequately cover the body when worn.
The foregoing and other objects and advantages of the wraparound garment of the present invention will become more readily apparent to those skilled in the art from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing and from the description following' It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more readily comprehensible, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.
in the drawings:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of slightly more than half a length of a garment of the present invention shown when off the body and in position when it may be used as a spread; the 2 halves of the garment being substantially identical;
FIG. 2 is a front, elevational view showing the garment in position on a body in readiness for being tied thereon;
FIG. 3 is a side elevation of the garment and body in the position of FIG. 2; and
FIG. 4 is a rear view of the garment on a body in position of being tied thereon.
Generally stated, the garment of the present invention is formed of a preferably rectangular strip or length of fabric sheeting having provision at its center for fitting over the thighs of the wearer and provision at each end for insertion therethrough of the wearers head and one arm; the two end portions being brought up for the last purpose along the sides of the body, with tie means provided along both the longer edges of thefabric strip for tying it about the body.
More specifically stated, the wraparound garment of the present invention comprises a strip of fabric, generally designated as 10, which may be formed of a length of sheet material, as of woven or nonwoven fabric, of a width about half the girth of the torso of the wearer, and of a length greater than twice the length of the torso. The fabric may have formed therein, to each side of its transverse center, in closely spaced relation, a longitudinally extending slit; the two slits, designated as 12 and 14, being aligned and spaced by the narrow crotch area, to. The edges of the slits l2 and 14 may be reinforced, as by buttonhole or hem stitching, or by sewing a binding tape, 17, thereon, as illustrated.
The garment body 10 is provided, adjacent each of its ends, with another longitudinally extending slit or opening, 18 and 20, respectively, in substantial alignment with slits l2 and 14, and with preferably likewise reinforced edges, as by the binding tape, 22. Slits l2 and 14 may be of a length to accommodate, when worn on the body, the thickness of the wearers upper thighs, and'slits 18 and 20 may be of greater length sufficient to permit the insertion therethrough of the wearer's head and one arm, and the accommodation of the wearer's neck and one shoulder. it may here be stated that, while the openings for receiving the thighs and the head and shoulder have been described and illustrated as being in the form of slits, they may also be formed to be of appreciable width, the slit form being preferred for the purposes of simplicity of production as well as being more suitable for the use of the garment as a spread.
Each longitudinal edge of the garment body l0 may be provided with a pair of ties designated as 24 and 26 on one side edge, and as 28 and 30 on the other side edge; each tie being connected to the edge of the garment body 10 at a distance from its center, to be disposed at approximately the height of the wearers waist when worn. The ties 24, 26, 28 and 30 may be formed of the same material and color as the garment body, or of different material and a contrasting color, for purposes of decor; and may preferably be formed of continuous strips of fabric which are connected by their center portions to the center portion of an edge of the garment body, as by sewing, for an appropriate distance, for convenience of production.
For use as a garment, the wearer steps with one foot through each of slits 12 and 14 and raises the center of the garment to bring the slits up to the upper thighs of the wearer. Thereafter, the wearer raises one end of the garment body 10 along one side of the torso and inserts the adjacent arm and the head through the slit at that end, as slit 22, disposing the garment body end with the inner end of the slit in the armpit of that torso side and its outer end over the opposed shoulder, as shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. Thereafter, the wearer raises the other end of the garment body 10 along the other side of the torso and inserts the other arm and the head through the other slit, 24, dropping the outer end of slit 24 on the other shoulder.
It will be seen that the garment body ends will overlap across the upper part of the torso, to cover it front and back, and that when the garment body ends are dropped on the shoulders, the edge portions of the garment body at the front and rear ofthe torso will sag (FIGS. 2 and 3). The wearer then raises the sagging center portions of the garment body and ties together tie 24 with tie 28, and tie 26 with tie 30, around the waist at the wearers front and rear (FIG. 4), to thereby cover the lower part of the torso. The tying together of ties 24 and 28, and 26 and 30, will produce pouchlike bulges, 32, at the wearers sides.
This completes the description of the wraparound garment of the present invention and the manner of its use. It will be apparent that the garment is of highly simplified construction; that it is completely flat and seamless, and, therefore, economical to produce and, for the same reason, useful as a spread on the ground or on an article of furniture, and completely foldable for carrying and storing; and that it has no specific front or rear and, therefore, may be easily and rapidly wrapped around the body. 4
It will also be apparent that many modifications and variations may be made in the garment of the invention by anyone skilled in the art, in accordance with the principles of the invention hereinabove set forth, without the exercise of any in ventive ingenuity.
