My invention relates to improvements in devices for beating bass-drums in orchestras,

the object heilig to provide a pedal by which the bassdrum and cymbal will be simultaneously tapped or beaten by a single performer.

To this end my invention consists in certain novel features shown in theV accompanying drawings, and which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. y

In the drawings, Figurel is a side elevation of a drum and cymbal provided with my improved pedal. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the manner of attaching the cymbal to the drum. Fig. 3 is adetail view of the combined drum-beater and cymbal-tapper, and Fig. 4 shows a modification thereof.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A indicates a bass-drum, and B a cymbal, of` ordinary construction. The cymbal is secured to a brace or support, O, which is attached to the rim of the drum a little to one side of the top center by means of a clamp, D. The drum is rigidly secured upon a suitable base-board, E, which extends some distance in front thereof, and upon which is mounted a treadle, F. rIhe treadle F is connected bya cord or other suitable connection, Gr, to the drum stick or beater H, the handle or aetion-bar h of which extends up past the rim of the drum, to which it is pivotally secured. The upper end of the actionbar h carries the cymbal-beater I, which is adjustably secured thereto byineans of a thumbserew, K, asshown. over the end of the barh and carries the thumbscrew K and the tapper J, pivotally secured in the closed end of the said socket. The bar h passes through an arm, L, to which it is rig'- idly secured, forming part of the clamp M, by which the device isv secured to the rim of the drum. The inner end of the arm L is pivotall y secured to avertical arm, N, which eX- tends upward from the clamp proper, m.

O is a coiled spring, having its opposite ends secured to the arms L and N, which serves to keep the beater in its normal position.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the arms L and N are dispensed with and the bar,

h is pivotally secured between two lugs, Z, on the outer upper corner of the clamp M, and the spring O is secured tothe inner upper corner of the clamp M, and the rod or bar h, as shown.

The operation of my device is simple and will be readily comprehended. When it is desired to tap the drum, the performer presses on the treadle, and thus draws the beater down against the drum-head, the action bar or rod swinging on its pivot and carrying the cymbal-tapper up against the cymbal, thereby siv multaneously sounding the drum and cymbal.

As soon as the instruments have been struck the foot is lifted from the treadle, and the spring O immediately acts upon and draws the bar h to its normal position.

By using my device a single performer is enabled to do the work which heretofore required threeperformers, his hands being free to play oneinstrument and the bass-drum and cymbal being operated by his foot, as before described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The combination of a drum, a cymbal mounted thereupon, and a rod pivoted to the rim of the drum and carrying the drum-beater and cymbal-tapper at its opposite ends, substantially as set forth.

2.
