UNITED STATES PATENT FFIQ.
GEORGE WASHINGTON BOWMAN, OF ESTHERVILLE, IOWA.
DRUM AND CYMBAL BEATEB.
Application filed May 29, 1913.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE VVAsHINe'roN BOWMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Estherville, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum and Cymbal Beaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drum and cymbal heaters, and its object is to provide a beater that can be folded up into such compact form that the case or cover of the drum can be slipped over same without removing the beater.
A further object is to provide a drum and cymbal beater that is self adjustingthat is to say, the drum can be moved from one place to another without having to readjust the beater.
A further object is to provide a drum and cymbal beater which can be readily and easily adjusted to permit the player to play heavy or soft beats.
A further object of my invention is to provide a drum and cymbal beater which can be easily and quickly attached to drums of various sizes, and a still further object is to provide a drum and cymbal beater which is simple and inexpensive and durable in construction and easy and effective in operation.
The invention consists in the features and combinations of features more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view; Fig. 2, a front view with the several parts of the beater folded; Fig. 3, a top plan view of Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views showing the means for attaching the cymbal-beater arm to the drunrbeater arm; Fig. 6, a front edge view of the plates with which the slidable tension-plate is connected; and Fig. 7, a detail view of the pedal with means for attaching the supportingplate to the drum.
In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, 1 represents the drum, which is provided with the usual shell 2, pig-skin heads 3, hoops or rims A and 5, retaining-hoops 6 for holding the pig-skin heads upon the shell of the drum, screwthreaded tension drum-rods 7 a tympanum or cymbal 8, and pointed supporting-legs 9. A plate 10 is provided, which has a hookshaped end 11, which extends over and engages the rim 1 of the drum, and a flange Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1915.
Serial No. 770,691.
12, having thumb-screws 12*, which extend over and engage the rim 5 of the drum, a supporting-plate 13 being hinged to the front of the hook-shaped end 11 of the plate 10 by means of a hinge 14, and a foot-pedal 15 is attached to the said supporting-plate and is hinged at 16.
An adjustable tension device 19, consisting of a slidable plate 20, having an elongated slot 21 therethrough and a hole 22 in its outer end, is mounted on the top of the clamping-plate 18 and adjustably clamped to said plate 18 by means of a thumb-nut 23, which passes through the slot 21 and screws into said plate 18.
The drum-beater comprises an arm 24:, the upper end of which is pivoted to the plate 18 by means of a hinge 25 and the lower end of which is provided with a ball 26, made of rubber or other resilient or springy material, and held in said arm by means of nuts 27 and 28. A link 29 is connected to the lower end of the arm 24 by being clamped thereon by the nut 28, and the pedal is operatively connected to said link by a strap 30.
The cymbal-beater comprises an arm 31, adjustably secured on the arm 24 of the drum-beater and provided with a hole 32 and a ball 32*.
The slidable plate 20 and the cymbalbeater arm 31 are operatively connected together by means of a spring 31, preferably a wide rubber band, said band at the upper end engaging the hole 22 of the slidable plate 20 and at its lower end engaging the hole 32 in the arm 31 of the cymbalbeater.
The tension of the spring 31 is regulated and controlled by means of the adjustable tension device 19 and the force of the blow of the cymbal-beater is regulated by adjusting the position of the same on the drumbeater arm and its distance with relation to the cymbal.
The operation is so apparent that it is not thought necessary to describe the same.
I do not wish to be restricted in the speeific details of construction as herein shown and des ribed, as the Same may be changed or modified Without spirit of my invention following claims.
Having thus described my invention, Wh at I claim is- 1. In a device of the a clamping departing from the and the scope of the character described, device comprising plates, a drum-beater arm pivoted to one of said plates, spring means connected to the said arm, a slidable plate connected to the springmeans adapted to control the tension of said spring means and regulate the force of the beat of the drum-beater arm, a slot in said slidable plate, a bolt passing through said slot, a thumb-nut on said bolt for locking the slid-able plate in adjusted positions, a pedal and means operatively connecting said pedal and the pivoted drum-beater arm, sub stantially as shown and described.
2. In a device of the character described,
a clamping device comprising plates adapt ed to be attached to the rim of a drum, a drum-beater arm pivoted to one of said plates, a tension plate slidably connected to the other plate, means for locking said plates in adjusted positions, means resiliently connecting the slidable tension plate and pivoted drum-beater arm, a cymbal, a cymbal-beater arm adjustably mounted on said pivoted arm, a pedal for operating the drum-beater arm and cymbal-beater arm, and means operatively connecting said pedal With said pivoted drumbeater arm, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I athx my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
