There has been developed in the course of years numerous styles of hair dressing for women involving a headdress ap pliance for maintaining the hair in a preset configuration. For this reason it is useful to employ a paof builder which will engage the head of the wearer and permit the confinement of the hair of the coiffure in a given arrangement.
There are, however, several factors which render it difficult to provide a headdress frame to be used as a paof builder of general useful sort. If too definite in its form the supporting frame is inapplicable to different head sizes and shapes. If loosely or limply constructed a supporting frame is incapable of performing its intended function because it's restraining effect lacks positiveness. If also is a matter of importance that a paof builder purposed for general and public use be of pleasing appearance and that the fundamental mechanical structure of the appliance be such as to adapt itself to simple construction.
At the present time many women and older girls spend consid'erable time, effort and money in obtaining and preserving the proper hair coiffure which is then in vogue. Consequently, they wish to have their hair maintained in a given position in an easily adjustable manner.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION It is an object of the present invention, therefore, to provide a novel head frame which can be used as a paof builder for supporting the wearers hair in a given position.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a head frame which is of strong and sturdy construction, adjustable in size, relatively light in weight, and comfortable to the wearer.
Other objects will be obvious as the disclosure proceeds.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Although the characteristic featuresof this invention will be particularly pointed out in the claims, the invention itself, and the manner in which it may be made and used, may be better understand by referring to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views and in which:

DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS The headdress frame illustrated in the drawings is adapted to be placed on the head of a person so as to support a portion of the hairdo in a selected position as illustrated in the drawings with respect to FIGS. 1-4. The headdress frame is generally indicated by the reference numeral 10, positioned on a head 12 ofa human to form a paof 14. In FIG. 1, we have illustrated regular to teased hair combed back for receiving the oval shaped headdress frame thereon as illustrated in FIG. 2. The headdress frame 10 is adjustable, as hereinafter described in detail, and in closing it the hair is pushed up into the paof 14 as seen in FIG. 3. As illustrated in FIG. 4, the headdress frame 10 may also be used when the head 12 of the user has long hair providing complete control and a neat result in forming the paof 14.
FIGS. 5-8, illustrate one form of construction of the headdress frame 10 and includes a pair of support arms 16 and 18, of a tubular configuration with an opening or passageway 19 formed by the wall 20 of a thickness to permit deflection thereof when a lateral force is applied there against. Accordingly, to provide the requisite resiliency the thickness of the wall 20 may be in the range of from 0.005 to 0.10 inches when made of plastic material. The passageway 19 in the arms 16 and 18 preferably have a noncircular cross section as viewed in FIG. 8, such as ovaloid.
Depending on the resiliency of the support arms 16 and 18 as well as the resultant shape desired, which as illustrated in the drawings is of an ovaloid configuration, the support arms 16 and 18 may have an arcuate shape and be concave in their normal position such that there is a certain arc defined between the respective ends 22 thereof. The actual curvature will be more apparent as the disclosure proceeds.
An extension device 25 is provided and is cooperatively associated with the support arms 16 and 18 to form an adjustable oval band so that the cross-sectional area thereof might be varied by the user to obtain the results illustrated in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4. The extension device 25 comprises a pair of extension members 27 and 29 which may be made of a plastic or metallic material and generally having a circular cross section as seen in FIG. 8. The respective extension members 27 and 29 are supported in sliding adjustable relationship in the openings 19 with respect to the support arms 16 and 18 such that each of the extension members 27 and 29 is individually adjustable with respect to the arms so that the headdress frame 10 is longitudinally adjustable to a variety of positions for openings dependent upon the size of the head of the user as well as the amount to be enclosed thereby.
In order to permit the relative adjustment, releasable retaining means 30 is provided and cooperatively associated between arespective companion support arm 16 or 18 and extension member 27 or 29. With respect to the form of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 5-8, the releasable retaining means 30 is designed and obtained by the proper configuration and dimensional relationship of the respective support arms 16 and 18 and their companion extension members 27 and 29. The support arms are provided having an arcuate shaped configuration to partially define the ovaloid configuration of the headdress frame 10. The extension members each include a base section 32 and a pair of integrally formed spaced apart resilient legs 34 extending from each end thereof. The resilient legs 34 in their unassembled free position either diverging or converging, and as illustrated in their normal unassembled position as illustrated in FIG. 5, are diverging at a greater degree or angle than the support arms with respect to their arcuate shape. When-assembling the extension members 27 and 29 with the respective support arms 16 and 18, due to resilient nature of the respective legs 34 as seen in FIG. 7, they substantially conform to the arc defined by the opening 19 which is formed by the support wall 20. This results in a frictional interference which is sufficient to maintain the frame 10 in a defined position when placed in same by the user and require a manual force to be applied to enlarge the frame 10 when it is to be removed or closed in position.
In addition, the support arms 16 and 18 may have the opening 19 of an ovaloid configuration such that as seen in FIG. 8 the dimension X corresponding to the major dimension or axis of the ovaloid is greater than the diameter of the leg 34 and the Y dimension of the opening 19 is substantially equal to the diameter of the leg 34. In this manner there is at least point contact at the opposite ends of the smaller dimension Y such that when adjustment is desired a static force can be applied in the direction of arrow 36 along the X axis to relieve the static force at points 35.
In this manner once the static force is applied in the direction of arrows 36 the contact at 35 is broken and free sliding relative adjustment is obtained. It should be noted that each respective junction of the leg and support arms which number four in total may be individually adjusted as hereinabove described to provide the user with complete freedom of adjustment to obtain the desired fit of the annular band that is formed to obtain the longitudinally adjustable motion. In this manner the frictional interference between the minor dimension of the ovaloid wall 20 of the support arm 16 or 18 and the diameter of the circular configuration of the legs 34 provide the requisite interference with the support arms 16 and 18 being compressible in the area of the ovaloid to increase the minor dimension to permit the relative adjustment therebetween.
FIGS. 9 13, illustrate another form of headdress frame 10a in accordance with the present invention and in which case relative adjustment is also obtainable between the respectives support arms 16a and 18a and the extension members 27a and 29a, of incremental amounts to provide the user with the ultimate in comfort. As seen in FIG. 9, the headdress frame 10a includes the support extension members 27a and 29a with the support arms 16a and 18a in this embodiment telescopically associated with the extension members and adapted to fit therein in interfitting relationship to obtain the desired adjustment.
The releasably retaining means 30a, in order to effectively secure the extension members in fixed relation to each other includes loop means 380 which is provided in an opening 40a in one end of a leg 34a of the extension member 27a as viewed in FIG. 10, which loop means 38a may include one or more loops or holding elements 42a which may be of ovaloid configuration and fabricated of a wound spring wire, or other suitable material, and may be anchored within the opening 40a, such as by stitching or other convenient means. The support arms 16a and 18a in this instance are in the form of an elongate flexible element having a strand portion 44a, say of plastic or other suitable material, and provided with a series of circumferential shoulders, ribs or teeth 46a, and may have one end 480 anchored in an aperture 50a provided in extension member 29a by press fit or other conventional means. The other end of the support arm 16 a extends into the loop means 38a, there being received through one or more of the distensible holding elements or loops 42a. The strand portion 44a is engageable through the receiver loop 42a, the latter being distensible, as by resilient deflection thereof, to engage past the shoulders or teeth 46a, and positively hold against withdrawal, in the absence of deliberate manipulation. The retaining means 30a is similar to that disclosed in FIG. 8, in that a force applied in the direction of arrow 36a will compress the ovaloid configuration and associated loop 42a so as to permit the relative movement inwardly or outwardly of the strand portion 44a as required. The strand portion 44a, illustrated in FIG. 11, has teeth defining annular shoulders spaced longitudinally along the strand such that these spaced-like projections which are disposed crosswise along its length are designed such that when the end portion of the extension members are deflected the teeth may pass therethrough.
The form of the releasable retaining means 30b illustrated in FIGS. 12 and 13, is one in which the support arm 16b has teeth 46b defining an ovaloid configuration transversely of the strand portion 44b. The extension member 29b as illustrated, snugly receives one end of the strand portion 44b in fixed relationship thereto and the opposite end of the arm 16b is adapted to be longitudinally adjusted with respect to the loop means 38b provided in the opening 40b of the extension member 27b. In this way the support arms provide the necessary adjustment therebetween by displacing the receiver loop 42b. The extension member 27b may have a greater diameter than the extension member 29b, such that they are in interfitting relationship with the leg 34b extending within the opening 40b so that the arms are not visible and the user's hair does not become entangled with the teeth 46b.
Although illustrative embodiments of the invention have been described in detail herein with reference to the accompanying drawing, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to those precise embodiments, and that various changes and modifications may be effected therein without departing from the scope or spirit of the invention, except as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising:
A. a pair of support arms having an opening at each end thereof;
B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable bend to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members secured to the respective end portions of said respective support arms in sliding adjustable relationship thereto, such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of its companion support arms so that the headdress frame is adjustable to a variety of positions, said extension members include a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs extending from each end thereof adapted to receive the respective ends of said legs of said extension members therein in said sliding adjustable relationship; and
C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said releasably retaining means includes the relationship of the opening in said support arms and the cross section of said legs to be of an ovaloid and circular configuration respectively, with the dimensional relationship providing frictional interference between the minor dimension of said ovaloid and the diameter of said circular configuration, said support arms being compressible in the area of said ovaloid to increase said minor dimension to permit said relative adjustment therebetween.
2. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising:
A. a pair of support arms arcuate in shape and having an opening at each end thereof;
B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable ovaloid shaped band to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members including a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs positioned within the openings in said respective support arms in sliding longitudinal adjustable relationship with respect thereto such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of said support arms so that the headdress frame is adjustable to a variety of positions; and
C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said means includes the relationship of said legs having an angular spacing therebetween in their unassembled free position different from the arcuate shape of said support arms so as to cause sufficient frictional interference when assembled therewith such that the extension members remain in their respective adjusted positions relative to their companion support arms, and said releasably retaining means further includes the relationship of the opening in said support arms and the cross section of said legs to be of an ovaloid and circular configuration respectively, with the dimensional relationship providing frictional interference between the minor dimension of said ovaloid and the diameter of said circular configuration, said support arms being compressible in band has an ovaloid configuration.

means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said releasably retaining means includes:
a. a strand portion on each of said support arms having a plurality of spaced toothlike projections disposed crosswise along its length; and .f
b. loop means secured to one end of each of said extension members for receiving an end of said strand portion, said loop means including a resilient member bent 5. A headdress frame according to claim 4, said tooth strand portion having teeth defining annular shoulders spaced longitudinally along said support arm.
6. A headdress frame according to claim 4, said toothed 5 strand portion having teeth each defining an ovaloid configuration transversely of said support-arm.
7. A headdress frame according to claim 4, wherein extension members are in telescoping relationship with respect to each other such that said suppo t arms are not visible when 10 the headdress frame is in use.

8. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising: v
A. a pair of support arms including a strand portion having a plurality of spaced toothlike projections disposed crosswise along its length;
B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted positionrelative to its companion support arm, said means including loop means secured to one end of each of said extension members for receiving an end of said strand portion, said. loop means including a resilient member bent to ovaloid configuration and deflectable to pass the teeth of said strand portion to provide for adjustable retention of the strand portion of the support arm received.

Claims (8)

1. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising: A. a pair of support arms having an opening at each end thereof; B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable bend to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members secured to the respective end portions of said respective support arms in sliding adjustable relationship thereto, such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of its companion support arms so that the headdress frame is adjustable to a variety of positions, said extension members include a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs extending from each end thereof adapted to receive the respective ends of said legs of said extension members therein in said sliding adjustable relationship; and C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said releasably retaining means includes the relationship of the opening in said support arms and the cross section of said legs to be of an ovaloid and circular configuration respectively, with the dimensional relationship providing frictional interference between the minor dimension of said ovaloid and the diameter of said circular configuration, said support arms being compressible in the area of said ovaloid to increase said minor dimension to permit said relative adjustment therebetween.

A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising: A. a pair of support arms arcuate in shape and having an opening at each end thereof; B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable ovaloid shaped band to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members including a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs positioned within the openings in said respective support arms in sliding longitudinal adjustable relationship with respecT thereto such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of said support arms so that the headdress frame is adjustable to a variety of positions; and C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said means includes the relationship of said legs having an angular spacing therebetween in their unassembled free position different from the arcuate shape of said support arms so as to cause sufficient frictional interference when assembled therewith such that the extension members remain in their respective adjusted positions relative to their companion support arms, and said releasably retaining means further includes the relationship of the opening in said support arms and the cross section of said legs to be of an ovaloid and circular configuration respectively, with the dimensional relationship providing frictional interference between the minor dimension of said ovaloid and the diameter of said circular configuration, said support arms being compressible in the area of said ovaloid to increase said minor dimension to permit said relative adjustment therebetween.
3. A headdress frame according to claim 1, wherein said band has an ovaloid configuration.
4. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising: A. a pair of support arms having an opening at each end, thereof; B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable band to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members secured to the respective end portions of said respective support arms in sliding adjustable relationship thereto, such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of its companion support arms so that the headdress frame is adjustable to a variety of positions, said extension members include a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs extending from each end thereof, adapted to receive the respective ends of said legs of said extension members therein in said sliding adjustable relationship; and C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said releasably retaining means includes: a. a strand portion on each of said support arms having a plurality of spaced toothlike projections disposed crosswise along its length; and b. loop means secured to one end of each of said extension members for receiving an end of said strand portion, said loop means including a resilient member bent to ovaloid configuration and deflectable to pass the teeth of said strand portion to provide for adjustable retention of the strand portion of the support arm received.
5. A headdress frame according to claim 4, said tooth strand portion having teeth defining annular shoulders spaced longitudinally along said support arm.
6. A headdress frame according to claim 4, said toothed strand portion having teeth each defining an ovaloid configuration transversely of said support arm.
7. A headdress frame according to claim 4, wherein extension members are in telescoping relationship with respect to each other such that said support arms are not visible when the headdress frame is in use.
8. A headdress frame to be applied to a persons head, comprising: A. a pair of support arms including a strand portion having a plurality of spaced toothlike projections disposed crosswise along its length; B. an extension device cooperatively associated with said support arms to form an adjustable ovaloid band to vary the size thereof, said extension device comprising extension members including a base section and a pair of spaced apart resilient legs in interfitting adjustable relationship with said support arms such that each of said extension members is individually adjustable with respect to one of said support arms so that the headdress fraMe is adjustable to a variety of positions; and C. means for releasably retaining said extension members in the respective adjusted position relative to its companion support arm, said means including loop means secured to one end of each of said extension members for receiving an end of said strand portion, said loop means including a resilient member bent to ovaloid configuration and deflectable to pass the teeth of said strand portion to provide for adjustable retention of the strand portion of the support arm received.
