Description

` "PETERS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D. CA
PATENTY OFFICE.
.j .j j SYLENS, WALKER, or BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
" i IMPROVED CLOTHES-WRINGER.
` l l i Speclicati'on `forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,6113, dated June 17, 1862.
\ "To all whom itumcty concern: i
` Be it known that I, SYLVENUS WALKER, of
Boston, inthe county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have `invented a new and Im- `proved `Clothes-VVringingi Device; and I do hereby declare that the following is. afull, clear, and exact description of the same, reference beinghadxto" the accompanying drawings, making apart of., this Specification, in
"which-2.
Figure lis afront view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sideview `of the same.`
Similarletters oflreference indicate correj vsponding parts in the two figures.
This invention relates to a clothes-wringi'ng machine `of that class `inwhich pressure- `rollerstareemployed; `and it consists in a ,novel andimprovedconstruction of the frame of the device, swhereby asimple and economical arrangementofthe severalparts compris--` ingthe machinelisFobtained, as well as sev-` i eral other,` advantages hereinafter set forth.
l To `enable those skilled in the art'to fully j understand andconstruct my invention, Ijwill proceed'to describe it.
A representsthe `frame of the machine,
, l which is of cast metal and formed ofy two side pieces, each of `whichis forked or provided with two prongs, a `a",}as shown yclearly in Fig. 2. These `:two jsidepieces are connected j i by a crossfrod,.b, and the front ends of the upper parts,c`,`of the `side pieces are each provided withacurved flange, dwhich projects inward at right angles from the side pieces. Each flange 1has .a double curve, so
as to serveas; a cap or guard for the ends of "both :the rollers BC ofthe machine.` The precise shape of the ianges is shown by the dotted lines inFig; `2, and they are at the front i sides of the rollers:l
The. lower roller, B, which is the `unyieldl ingone, has its bearings c in Vthe front parts of the upper partsLc, of the side pieces, and the upper roller, C, has itsbearings formed of detached sockets D D, eachof which is provided with twoears or lugs, f f, through `which a screw, E, passes.
The screws E E also pass through ears for lugs g `q,`,which project horizontally outwardfrom the side pieces of the frame A, and also pass through india-b rubber or other suitable springs, F, the upper ends of whichV bear against the under sides of the lugs y g. On the upper part of each screw E there is iittedV `a thumb-nut, G, and byscrewing down these thumbnuts the upper roller, C, is made to bear upon` the 4lower roller, B, with a greater or less degree of pressure, as may be desired.
The front prongs, a, of the side pieces of the frame A are longer than the back ones, a', and to the short prongs a eccentrics H H are attached, one to each. These eccentrics are each provided with a lever or handle, I, as shown in both figures. Y
rlhe rollers B G may beoi india-rubber or other suitable elastic material.
The machine or device is secured to the tub jthe lower one being turned by a crank. The
flanges d prevent the clothes as they enter be- )tween the rollers B Cfroln passing in between the ends of the rollers and the side pieces of theframe'and wedgin'g or binding therein. The springs F,.in consequence of being ar- 4ranged as shown-to wit, projecting down at the outer sides of the side pieces of the frame A-are entirely out ofthe way and render the machine very compact, while the screws E E, passing through the ears or lugs of` the sockets or bearings D D of the upper roller' and through the ears or lugs g g of the frame A, and through the springs F, as shown and de-- scribed, form a very simple and efcient connection of the yielding roller to the frame. The springs F, it will be understood, admit of the upper roller, C, yielding or giving to suit the irregularities of the larger clothes passing between them,
Having thus described my invention, what l of the upper roller, C, through the ears or I claim as nemend desire toseeure by Letters lugs g g of the frame A, and through the Patent, ssprings F F, underneath the ears or lugs g g, The frame A,construeted of two forked side all arranged as and for the purpose specitied. pieces and provided with curved anges or SYLVENUS WALKER. guards d d and ears or lugs g g, in eombina- Witnesses: tion with the screws E E, passing through the S. S. HEMENWAY, ezrrs or lugs f f ofthe sockets or bearings D D BENJAMIN F. BROWN.
