PLOW-POINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,172,-dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed m 17, 1886. Serial'No. 202,440. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, DUDLEY J. SPAUL- DING and THOMAS THIsrLnwooD, citizens of the United States, residing at Black River Falls, in the county of Jackson and State of -Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Points, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in plow-points, and its design is to provide a cheap, simple, and durable plow-point, and at the same time one whose passage through the soil will tend to sharpen it or keep it in a normally sharpened condition.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and on which similar letters of reference indicate the same or corresponding features, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the plow-point attached to its share. Fig. 2 is a like view to Fig. 1 with the share removed. Fig. 3 is a similar View looking from the other side; and Fig. 4., a trans- Verse sectional view on the line a w of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The letter A designates the plow-share provided with the apertures B and O, and the letter D represents a curved arm or brace secured at one end to a bar, E, which connects with the rear end of the plow-point, its other end serving the purpose of supporting the rear edge of the plow-share.
The letter B designates the plow-point.
proper, the same consisting of the body, which gradually widens in the direction of the point, where it is curved, as seen at 0, along which curve it is reduced to a sharp edge for the The point is cut away or rabbeted upon its upper surface, so as to form a wing, D, which occupies a plane below the plane of the surface B. A channel or groove, F, (seen more clearly in Fig. 4,) is formed beneath the edge of the surface B, and within this channel the plowshare is snugly fitted. The shoulder F of the channel serves to receive the lower forward end of the share and to assist in the rigidity of the connection between the point and the share. ThelandsideEof the pointis extended rcarwardly some distance and shouldered at E, where a bar, E, which forms a. continuation of the landside, is secured by a bolt, G. The share is provided with a hole coincident to the hole B in the wing D, and a bolt, H, serves to connect the share and wings firmly together.
It is to be observed that the point can easily be removed from the plow in case of break age and a new one substituted therefor, the loosening of the bolt in the aperture B and the one in the base of the plow-point being all that is necessary. It will also be observed that the curved arm supporting the rear portion of the plow-share may be provided with a series of holes for the bolt supporting that end of the share, so that the inclination of the edge of the share to the plow-point may be varied.
Having thus fully described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination, with a plow-point consisting of a body, B, the upper surface whereof occupies one plane, and having a cutting-edge, G, and of a wing, D, which occupies a plane below the surface B, and having a channel, F, at the juncture of the wing and body, a shoulder, F, and a landside portion, E, of a plow-share, A, fitted into said channel and upon said wing D, and secured by a bolt, H, a brace, D, secured to the share at G, and a bar, E, connected to said brace and to the-landside E.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
