Description
` N *UNITED STATES tMPRoi/"EM ENT IN ODOR To all whom it .may concern,.- V Be it known that I; WILLIAM E. HAfrIIIELD, yof the city of Newark7 in the county of Essex i and State of New Jersey, have invented certain v Improvements in OdorTraps; andIdo hereby declare the following.` to be a'full and exact descriptionof thesaine, reference being herein .A t had tothe" drawings which accompany this specification and make a part of the same. I The natureof Infyiinprovement consists in the construction andarrangement of'a flap or valve in pipes leading from sinks or from Wa- I ter-closets, so as to admit of easy'egress and U insure a tight c1o`sing`,"the same being opened by thepassing matter or `duid without liability of being cloggedxupthereby. y In the drawings, Figure l represents the valve attached to a common kitchen sink. Fig. 2 is a sectional view `of the valve and its case, shown onthe side. Fig. shows` the end in asectonal view.`
` The same letters refer tothe same part on each gure.` I I `The caseor tight box iuclosing the iiap or valveis shown bythe letter A, the upper end ofthe xpipe projecting above the `top of the case to admit" of its attachment to the conducting-pipes of sinks, cisterns, 8vo. rI he bottoni` end of thepipe B is out at a very acute angle, and the ap C, hinged to the pipe B at k, ts

PATENT FFICE.-
-TRAPS` FOR suNKs, sto.
" specificati@ forming part Letters Patent No. 35,6`o6, med June 11, 1ste.
the back of the pipe B, just above the hinge of the ilap, is a projection, n, forming a hinge for the support ot' the lever D. 'On one end of the crooked'lever D is a weight, o, which, by pressingthe other end of the lever against the flap C, keeps it closed and allows it freely Vto open. By the acuteness of the angle all lodg- `ment of `passing matter is wholly prevented, and it' frost should hold it a slight punching would open it without inj uring its operating.`
I do not confine myself to ahinge for the flap or valve C, any means of suspending it answering the same purpose. If hinged, the hinge has to be so loose as to' allow the pressure'of the weight o to hold the flap close at l both of its ends.
I do not claim appurtenances for balancing Aa valve or for closing it when opened, as does D. Bedford in his patent of September 25, 1855; but v .e
What I do claim7 and desire to secure7 is The odor-trap having a valve at such an `acute angle'as to require but slight pressure to close or open it, when constructed substantially in the Inanner and for the purpose hereinabove specified. Y
W. E. HATFIELD.
