VENTILATOR.

mmm-a Application filed 'May 2?, 1915.
To all whom 'it may concern:
'Be it known that l, ERNST l?. KLEMME, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Vtisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in ventilators, of which the followingis a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
rlhis invention relates to ventilators for water closets, and has for its object to provide means for automatically opening up a ventilating connection 'between the closet bowl and thel vent pipe when the closet seat is raised, and closing vsaid connection at other times.
Referring-to the accompanying drawings, in which llke characters of reference indicate the same parts in the different views,
Figure 1 is a 'side view of a water closet provided with a ventilator constructed in .accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 isv an enlarged viewvof the ventilator connection;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view l thereof; and,
Fig. l is a transverse sectional view thereof.
In these drawings 10 indicates a water closet bowl having a hinged cover 11, as usual, and 12 is the flushing tank connected with the bowl by .a water pipe 13. A T 14 is fitted in the water pipe and threaded therein is the reduced neck portion of a horizontal cylindrical casing 15. A tubular connection 16 isthreaded in the rear end of the casing and the opening in its end is adapted to be closed by a valve member 17 hinged within the casing by being liXed on the square central portion of a shaft 18 which is journaled across the casing. A lever 19 is fixed on one end of shaft 18 and its upper end is connected to a spring 20 which is attached to the casin and tends to keep the valve closed. rl`he lbwer end of lever 19 is connected by a link 21 to the lower end of a vertical lever 22 which is' fulcrumed in a bracket 23 on the yiushing tank 12, and the lever 'is bent forwardly upper end of sai 'to be engaged by the closet seat cover when the latter is in it open position. rlhe weight of the closet seat cover bearing against the Specication of Letters Patent.,
Patented Aug.. "l, 1911??.
Serial No.
end of lever 22 is sufcient to swing the valve 17 to its open position against the action of spring 20 so that as long as the cover is open the valve is open, but when the cover is closed the spring holds the valve closed.
rlhe end of the tubular connection 16 is suitably connected with the plumbing vent pipe 24 as by threading it through an opening therein so that when the valve is open there is adirect Ventilating connection from the closet bowl to the vent pipe, but as this connection is" automatically closed again as -plug 25 which is threaded in the bottom thereof.
What l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A water closet ventilator, comprising a casing connected with the closet Ibowl water supply pipe, a shaft journaled across the casing, a valve thereon for closing the opening through the casing, and a lever on the 'shaft outside of the casing by which the valve may be opened and closed.
2. A water closet ventilator, comprising a cylindrical casing connected with the closet bowl water supply pipe, a tubular connection fitting therein andl connected with the vent pipe, a shaft journaled across the casing, a valve thereon for closing the opening through the tubular connection, a lever on the shaft, a spring engaging the lever for closing the valve, a lever positioned to be engaged by the closet seat' cover, and a link connecting the two levers..
ln testimony whereof, I aiiiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ERNST F. KLEMME.
