POKER.
Patented Jan. 1l, 1887.
' 'vict/en 7":
, UNITED STATES PATENT OEFICEf JAMES PRESTON REOK, OE MOLINE ILLINOIS.
POKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,754, dated January 11, 1887.
` Application filed January 23, 1886. Serial No. 189.444. (Model.) Y
Island and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Poker, o f which the following is a specification.
I will first explain the objects of the invention. The depressions or slots in stove-lids,
by which they are lifted from the holes in` stoves, are so different in their formation that a poker, on the lower end of which a stovelifter has been placed, will not standat the same angle in all lids. The poker often leans back so far that the lifting-'power is applied atan angle with the lid, instead of in a line perpendicular to the slot, whereby the weight is thrown above the center of gravity and a lateralmovement given to the lid when it is lifted. The object of this .invention is to prevent this lateral movement ofthe lid byconstructing an implement whereby the lifting-power can always be applied in a line perpendicular to the slot and the weight of the lid kept below the center of gravity.
A second object is to construct an implement with coalpicks on each side near its lower extremity so arranged that they will perform the double functions of coal-breakers and fulcrums for a lid-lift located on the lower end of the implement.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 35 Figure 1 is a perspective of the implement when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing coal-picks on both sides of an arc on the lower end of the implement, and also show-A ing the form which enables them to act as fulcrums for a lid-lift.
Similar letters refer to similar parts through out both views.
In Fig. 1A is a metal rod the lower end of which is bent so as to form an arc. On the sidesl of this arc are formed two wings or shoulders, c @which may serve for coal-picks. These coal-picks are heavy and curved on their upper sides, so as to perform the functions of hammers and at the same time admit of their being readily withdrawn from the fire. On their under sides they are wedge-shaped, so as to pierce the fuel, and where the top and undersides meet they form sharp points or angles, lwith which the coal and oinders are cracked. The undersides nt down mule iid '55 and perform the functions of fulcrums for the vare on the endof the rod, and combine with VS, whereby the lifting-power can always be applied directly over the arc on the lower end ofthe poker or rod and in a line perpendicular to the slot in the lid. Y
When the implement stands perpendicularto the lid, the lifting-power is applied at N, Fig. l. When the implement leans back at a distance from a perpendicular equal to onehalf the length of the handle S, the fingers move along the handle to U, and the` power is applied directly over the slot in the lid. When the implement leans back from a perpendicular a distance equal to the whole length of the handle, the lifting-power is ap- 8o plied at, L. The place where the liftingpower should be applied depends, therefore, on
the angle which the implement makes with the lid and the handle should face this angle. When the lifting-power is thus applied, the weight of the lid always falls below the center of gravity and all lateral movement is prevented.
My invention is therefore'a poker having at its lower extremity a stove-lifter of new-9o and peculiar construction, the whole being arranged so as to form one implement capable of performing all the functions of a poker, a stove-lifter and a coal-breaker. p What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. The poker A, having the coal-breakers c c,- formed as fulcrums for a lid-lift, Z, on the lower extremity, substantially as specified.
2.. The poker A, formed at its lower exloo tremity with the lifter Z, and lateral shoulders o c, adapted to serve as fulcrums for the lidlift and as coal-picks, substantially as specified.
