l Clllln. 23h72) l Thisjinvention relates to a railroad tie and more .particularly to improvements in a metal railroad tie as exemplified in my lPatent 2,128,272
of'August 30, 1938.
Itis an object of my invention to provide an yimproved metal railroad tieformed of sheet metal and. having4 a composition or `wood filler below the rail sections to support the weight of the trains.
`Another object of the invention is Vto provide a railroad tie formed sectionswhich form a box-like structure where-y by a ller may -be inserted into the ends of the tie to support-the rails and to provide an adapter plate to anchor the rail to the tie. Still another object of this invention is to provide a@ metal railroad tie and an adapter plate for thetie to adapt all sizes of rails'to the tie by using an adapter of the particular sized rail section to this'one tie,
Tothe foregoing' objects, and others which fully appear, the invention consists voi the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts.' as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be 'resorted to which fall within the scope of the In thev drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tiel and adapter plate,
Figure 2 is a vertical section of the tie and adapter plate with a rail in place,
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, elevation ofthe tie and adapter of Figure -1,. a Figure 5 is a plan view of a modiiied form of the tieand adapter plate,
'e 6 is a. side elevation of the rail in Figof correlated sheet-metal proper sizeto anchor the 23 which overlie the isa sectionl on the line I-'l of Flgvure,"
e 8 is a second modied form of adapter, s Figure 91s a tool for assembly and disassembly Referring to the drawings,
structed. according to an embodiment of my inthe numeral I3 designates generally'an improved railroad tie conl 50. of two flat metal 'sheets -or plate members." and I2 of'steeLor othersuitable material, so Iformed and secured ,together to form an elongated hollow box-likek structure or,tie..,The plate members Il and l2` into the ends of 2 are secured together by upper and lower correlated lonsitudinal ribs I3 and I4 which are ilxed together by engaging U-shaped clamping members I5 into the apertured section I3 of the adjacent rib. A rectangular opening I'I is provided :in the upper surface of the tie I0 at each end thereof so that the filler I8 is exposed to the rail I3 andrai] tie adapter 20.
Filler blocks Il are provided to be inserted the ties III at each end thereof to provide a substantial base for the rails I3 and adapters 23. The filler blocks I3 may be solid of a suitable wood as kiln dried, creosoted, oak or of a preformed composition of suitable strength which need not be solid but may be formed as al hollow plug as shown in Figure 3. Suitable tongues., as 2l and 22, may be formed on or .struck from the sides `of the ties to secure the mier 'I3 from movement from or within the tie I l. The upper surface of the tie I0 and tie plate members Il and I2 is formed also with portions cutout section or opening I1 to form locking members or anchors 23 which are adapted to clamp over the base flange of the adapter 23.
The adapter 20 is formed of a metal base 23 having a pair of upstanding tongues or keepers 2l formed integrally therewith spaced inwardly` from the side edges of the base so that the base is also provided with base anges 23. It is preferred that the adapter or tie plate 2l! be cast in one piece and then cut in two so that the plate 2li itself will provide a certain degree of adjustment to illl various sized rails.
In the use and operation of this tie Il and adapter 23 the plug I3 is first inserted into the hollow metal tie I0 and fixed in place by bending over the tongues 2I and 22. The tie Il is placed under a rail I9 and raised so that the adapter 23 may be driven between the block I3 and rail I3. Peening down the corners of the overlapping portion of the upper wall of the tie plate over the adapter securely locks all parts of the tie in place.
With this type of adapter 2l, it may be more desirable to construct the hollow metal tie without the overlapping flanges by welding the sections together and installing the end blocks I3 at 'the factory.
A slightly modified form of tie and adapted plate is shown in Figures 5 to 7, wherein the top wall of the tie members Il and I2 in the portions 23 which overlie the adapter 30 is formed with an pertlired tongue Thoadapter 33 is formed with openings 32 along 3 I strucksfrom the portion 23. Y
y ceases the edge of the outer ilange which provide keepers for the tongues Il in the assembled position. The tongues Si are hammered down into the keepers I2 to securely lock the adapter 3l to the rail. An opening 3l is provided in each of the tongues 3i for the insertion of a tool It to pull the tongue 3l out oi the opening 3! when it is desired to remove the adapter 30.
On the adapter I0, the keeper 25 is nearer the outer edge of the flange oi the adapter to provide a wider opening between keepers 2i. for use with a splice bar adapter 34.
In the use of this adapter 30, the adapter 30 is driven between the rail il and block I8, and the tongues 3i hammered into the openings or keepers 32 for locking the adapter I0 to the rail I0.
'Ihe adapter 35 shown in Figure 8 is of a type to be used with smaller rails where the ange does not extend outwardly far enoimh to reach the keeper 25 of the adapter I0. The upstanding lug 36 will stabilize thelonger ange of this type of rail tie adapter.
For the assembly and disassembly of the rail ll0 and adapters 30, I have provided a special tool I0. One end of the tool I0 has a rounded hammerhead 4I on one side for peening the tongues 3i into the apertures 32, and opposite the hammer face is an outwardly extending cleat 42 which is adapted to be inserted through the opening 33 under the outer edge of the tongue 3| so the tongue 3l may be pried out oi the keeper 32. The opposite end M of the tool I0 isprovided with a hook 45 which is adapted to be engaged with the clamping members I5 on the anges I3 and i4 for disengaging the interlocked anges when it is desired to remove the rails I0.
' The exact configuration illustrated is regarded as the optimum, but some of the desirable results inherent in this disclosure may be obtained by various slight modifications including some departure from the exact conguration shown,
and it is therefore. requested that the scope er A ythe invention should be regarded as limited only by the termsoi the claim.
` Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination of a rail tie comprising a hollow tubular member having a top wall, a filler disposed within said tubular member, said top wall being formed with an opening therein, up-
wardly inclined anchor members integral with said top wall extending along the edges of said opening transverse of said tie, malleable apertured tongues struck from said anchor members, and a rail tie adapter having horizontally disposed base ilanges formed with openings along the edges thereof disposed in said iirst opening and carried by said filler with said ilanges underlying said anchor members, said flange openings adapted to receive said tongues whereby said anchor members will resist vertical displacement of said adapter, said tongues will prevent longitudinal 'movement of said adapter when engaged with said ange openings, and said tongue apertures constitute means for receiving a prying tool for lifting said tongues out of engagement with said vflange openings.
