SAFETY-PIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.355,535, dated January 4-, 1887.

Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety-Pins, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description,reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, formingpart of this specification.

This invention is in the nature of an im provement in safety-pins; and the invention consists in a safety-pin constructed in the manner hereinafter described, shown, and claimed.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 shows my safety-pin with its combined lock and stop device in position to serve as a stop or guide. Fig. 2 shows it with this device in use as a lock. Figs. 3 aud t are sections in the line 00 m, Fig. 2, the former showing a lock with an eye, and thelatter one with a recess.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

This improvement relates particularly to a combined locking and stop device, in combination with the ordinary safety or spring pin,

the object being to lock the point of the pin within its shield by one adjustment of the device, and to present a stop or guard which will prevent the too free passage of the pin sidewise through the slot or opening in the shield by another; and to that end I construct my device with a look, A, and stop B, made, preferably but not necessarily, from one and the same piece of metal. The lock and stop, however, are at right angles to each other, in the form of a bell-crank, as in Fig. 1.

The lock of this device consists of a rigid arm with a recess, a, in its upper end, as in I Fig. 4, or, if desired,'with an eye, I), as in Fig. 3; and the stop B is a similar piece of metal,

but pointed at its end, instead of recessed, and somewhat shorter than the lock-arm A. The combined device having substantially the foregoing construction is pivoted at o in any desiredmanner to the shield O, or to the wire member (I of the pin, so that by turning on its pivot either the look A or stop B will ex tend upward at or about the throat 6 ot, the pin, it being obvious that when the lock 1s up the stop is down and parallel with the member d of the pin, and vice Versa. Now when the look A is up, as in Fig. 2, its recess a incloses the pin at or near its point, and snugly confines or looks it within the shield 0, so that no accidental downward pressure will disengage it therefrom to injure the wearer. When, however, the look A is down and the stop is up, as in Fig. 1, then the point of the pm may be easily pressed out of the shield on one side or the other of the stop; but since the stop is interposed across the throat e of the shield, the pin cannot pass freely sidewise through the throat of the pin, and the result is that when using the pin-as in the dark--th 1s stop becomes practically a guide to lead the pm into the shield, and so prevents the common occurrence of the passage of the point of the pin entirely through the shield,leaving the pin unwith an eye, b, this eye may be passed over I the top of the shield, as in Fig. 3; and it becomes a convenience when the lock or stop is adjusted, since it offers a projection above the shield which can be operated by the finger.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In combination, a safety-pin and aplvoted lock and stop united at or substantlally at right angles to each other, and adapted to operate as described.

2. In combination, a safety-pin and a piv Y oted stop and lock united at or substantially at right angles to each other, and provided with an eye, I), as and for the purpose descrlbed.
