. UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
MICHAEL XV. HANLEY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SEPARATOR FOR STEAM-GENERATORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,166, dated December 28, 1886.
Application led April 2.5, 1884. Serial No. 129,296. (No model.)
l To all whom/.it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL W. HANLEY,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separators for Steam-Generators, which are fully set forth in the following speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a longitudinal vertical section of a steam-generator embodying my improvements; and Fig. 2, a cross section of the same, taken on the linex x in Fig. l.
My invention relates to separators for steam generators, its object being to provide means for producing anhydrous steam, or, in other words, to prevent the water which may be mingled with the steam from passing through the boiler into the steam-pipe, and to this end my invention consists in certain novel features, which I will now proceed to describe, and will then particularly point out in the claims.
In the drawings I have shown my separator applied to a steamV generator, in which A represents the furnace provided with a trechamber, B, at one end, having' the usual gratebars, b,and tire-wall b anda cap, b2, preferably constructed of, or at least lined with light-colored fire-brick. C represents the boiler set upon the furnace in the usual manner, this latter being provided with barrier-walls D underneath the same, forming al series of combustion-chambers. The boiler-ilues E, preferably concavo-conveX, as shown, lead from the rear end of the furnace to the draft-ilue F, which latter communicates with the chimney G. The draft-ilue^is provided with a damper, H, connected by means of a rod, h2, to a crankarm, i, on a rock-shaft, I, the other end of the rocl-shaft being provided with a similar cranlcarm, z", to which the rod J for operating the damper or draft-regulator is connected.
The parts just described constitute my preferred form of steam-generator, although, of course, any approved apparatus for the purpose may be substituted therefor, and I do not ,limit myself to this particular construction.
My improved separator is constructed as follows:
supply-pipe, N, in a dry condition.
L represents a steam-dome mounted upon the boiler, on the top thereof, and c a steampipe extending upward through the bottom of said dome into the same and terminating within it a short distance below the top thereof.
being somewhat larger than the steam-pipe, kthe upper end of which it incloses and sur rounds. without closing the same, as clearly shown in the several figures of the drawings.- 'In operation it will be seen that the steam passing up through the steam-pipe cis thrown down again by the cap or casing between it and the pipe, so that the steam is forced down onto the boiler surface or bottom of the dome, from whence it arises to the upper part of the dome and is taken oft' for use by means of a The result of this operation upon the steam is to deprive it of any spray or'water which 'it may have carried from the boiler, the water'being arrested at the bottom of the steam-dome, and the steam being delivered in a nearly dry or anhydrous condition. v
rIhe cap M is supported within the steamdome by means ot' lugs or flanges m, or any other suitable supporting-arms. A faucet, Z, is applied to the lower edge of the steam-dome, as shown in Fig. 2 of thevdrawngs, so that the water and condensed steam accumulating in the dome may be drawn oft' whenever desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-l ters Patent, is-
l. In a separator for steanir-generators, the combination, with a steam-dome and a steampipe passing upward through the bottom of said dome, of a cap or casing closed at the top and open at the bottom and covering the open upper end of the steam-pipe, substantially as specified.
2. In a separator for stoma-generators, the
combination, with a steam-dome closed at the bottom and a steam-pipe passing upwardly through said closed bottom and terminating within the dome, of a cap or casing having a closed upper end and open lower end, the said the vdome above the end of the pipe c, and exdome, pipe, and oasingbeing arranged subtending downward around the same toward Io stantialy as shown and described, and for the the bottom of the dome, substantially as and purposes specified. d for the purposes specified.
3. The combination, with the boiler G and MICHAEL W. HANLEY.
steam-dome L, closed at the bottom, of the Witnesses: pipe c, extending from the boiler upward into W. O. CORLIEs. thesteam-dome, and the cap M,arran'ged Within A. M. BEST.
