I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARION J. GORDON, OF OALDIVELL, TEXAS.
FENCE.
SPECIEECA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,408, dated December 14, 1886.
Application filed September 7, 1886. Serial K211129152.
(No model.)
economy of material, as hereinafter set forth.
In theannexcd drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a fence embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same through one of the slatted panels.
The letter A designates the fenceposts, which are set at intervals a little greater than the length of the bars or slats B, that'are to form the fence-panels. Near the top of each post, on its front face, is a staple, a, for supporting a continuous line of barbed wire, 0, of any suitable or well-known kind.
On the inner sides of the posts, at or near the bottom, a're staples b, for attachment of vertical lines of twisted wire a, that engage the ends of the horizontal slats B, as shown, said wires being made to form loops around the ends of the slats for the purpose of supporting them properly at suitable intervals. The upper portion of these vertical wires 0, above the upper slat of each panel, are twisted together, as shown, to hold said upper slats in place, and then said wires are passed between strands or twisted around the horizontal barbedwire line C, adjaceutto one of the barbs d, which serves to prevent the Wires 0 from sllpping sidewise. The twisting of the wires 0 upon themselves is continued above the barbed-wire line C, and then said twisted wires 0 are carried inward toward the upper ends of the posts A, and secured in notches 6, formed therein; or the wires 0 may be fastened to the upper ends of said posts in any convenient manner, and, if desired, the vertical wires on opposite sides of the posts can be connected to each other by twisting, tying, or otherwise.
In order to prevent the vertical wires 0 from slipping sidewise at the bottom of the panels, and thereby obviate lifting of said panels, and
at the same time afford a more secure means of holdingthem in place, a wire loop,f, is passed around each end of the lower horizontal slat, B, in such a manner as to embrace the lower twisted portion of each vertical wire 0, and so secure it in line with the slat.
It will be seen that by the construction above described the panels composed of horizontal slots 0 are firmly braced both at top and bottom, so that they cannot possibly lift upward out of their proper position under the strain of the wires, while the attachment of g the vertical wires 0 to the upper ends of the fence-posts is such as to relieve the barbedwire line C of excessive strain and cause the posts to sustain the weight of the panels.
I am aware that a fence has been composed of posts, top and bottom barbed-wire strands connected'with the posts, horizontal slats and vertical wires looped around the ends of the slats and connected with the lower wire strand and with the post below the upper wire strand. I am also aware that in another instance a. fence has been composed of horizontal slats, posts and braces at the ends thereof, a top rail or ridersupported by the braces, and wires looped around the slats and connected with the rider and the lower ends of the braces. Such constructions, therefore, I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A fence consisting of posts A, a barbed-wire line, C, connecting the top portions of the posts, the, horizontal slats B, the vertical wires 0, secured at their lower ends to the lower portions of the post, and looped around the slats and connected at their upper portions to the wire line, and thence extending upward and secured to the upper ends of the posts above said wire line, and wire loops f, passing around the ends of the lower slats and connected with the lower portions of the vertical wires, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARION J. GORDON.
