Definitions

  • a form changing device for castings in a continuous casting operation is formed of a rigid frame for supporting form changing rolls.
  • the frame has an inverted T-shaped configuration with its upright web having an opening for the passage of the casting from a pair of vertically arranged rolls supported on one side of the 'web to a pair of horizontally arranged rolls on the other side.
  • Support arms are articulated to and extend outwardly from the web and each form changing roll is supported by a pair of spaced support arms.
  • Adjustable means are secured to the outer ends of the support arms for varying the spacing between cooperating rolls.
  • Cross members are provided between the adjusting means to supply additional rigidity to the device.
  • One of the cross members may be a shaft provided with cams for affording a fine adjustment of the spacing between cooperating form changing rolls.
  • a bearing means including an adjustably movable member, such as a piston cylinder and arm, permits the pivotal movement of the combination of the support arms, adjusting members, and cross members relative to the web of the frame.
  • An adjustable holddown device is provided on the web of the frame for properly positioning the casting in its passage between the horizontal and vertical rolls.
  • the present invention is directed to a form changing device for castings in a continuous casting operation and, more particularly, it is concerned with a form changing device containing a rigid frame construction for supporting adjustably positionable vertical and horizontal pairs of form changing rolls.
  • the primary object of the present invention is to afford a form changing device which is rigidly yet adjustably supported for adapting to the various changes in the dimensions of the castings.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide form changing rolls which are easily replaceable.
  • a further object of the invention is to utilize alternating horizontal and veritcal pairs of rolls for forming the castings.
  • Another object of the invention is to afford adjusting means for the rolls for adapting to the various temperature difference which exists within the continuous casting as compared to the temperature conditions at the shell or outer surface of the casting.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide an adjusting device for the rolls which affords both a coarse and a fine adjustment of the spacing between the rolls.
  • Yet, another object of the invention is to provide means for rigidly supporting the form changing rolls yet permitting adjustable movement of the rolls relative to the frame.
  • -A further object of the invention is to provide a compact arrangement of the rolls and their supporting members whereby a multiple number of the form changing devices can be positioned within a relatively small space.
  • the present invention is directed to a form changing device incorporating a frame or support member on which the deforming rolls can be easily replaced and in which the frame is rigid and resistant to bending forces.
  • a structural member having an inverted T-shaped cross section with a passage through its upright web for the casting is considered particularly adaptable for positioning and supporting the deforming rolls on opposite sides of its web.
  • a pair of vertically arranged deforming rolls are positioned on one side of the upright web portion of the frame while a horizontally arranged pair of deforming rolls are positioned on the opposite side of the web.
  • the pairs of rolls are aligned with one another for passing a casting therebetween through the opening in the web.
  • Another important feature of the invention is the manner in which the vertically and horizontally arranged rolls are movably, yet rigidly, positioned on the frame.
  • Support arms are articulated or pivotally secured to the frame at one end and are attached to adjusting members, for example, at their other ends.
  • the Support arms are constructed to afford easy removal and replacement of the deforming rolls. Further, the time required for making a changeover of the rolls is reduced, and because of the interchaneability of the horizontally and vertically arranged rolls, a relatively small stock pile of rolls is required for form changing operations.
  • the deforming operation since the forces applied by the rolls are directed perpendicularly to one another on opposite sides of the web of the frame a simple construction of the frame is afforded. Additionally, because of its simple and compact construction, the frame is accessible from all sides and it is possible to arrange a number of similar devices in side-by-side relationship for use in multiple continuous casting operations.
  • both a coarse and a fine adjustment is provided for the cooperating rolls.
  • the coarse adjustment can be effected and any fine or precise adjustments can be made during operation to offset any of the changes in the dimensions of the casting as it travels throughout the device.
  • Another important feature of the invention is the provision of cross members extending in the direction of the axes of the rolls and interconnecting the ends of the support arms secured to the adjusting members.
  • These cross members afford additional rigidity for the form changing device. Accordingly, with the support arms securely held in two directions by the adjusting members and the cross members there is no need of a special construction for the arms, and a greater rigidity is provided for the roll support arrangement.
  • the use of cams or similar devices in combination with the cross members furnishes a fine adjustment for the positioning of the rolls.
  • the main members of the adjusting arrangement for the rolls serve more as supports for the passage of the continuous casting and for absorbing the deformation forces.
  • a greater degree of accuracy is available.
  • the proper alignment of the pairs of rolls can be achieved by an adjustable lifting member which supports the roll support arrangement.
  • a lifting device can be provided under the cross member of the support arrangement for the horizontally arranged rolls for properly positioning the rolls relative to the other pair. In this arrangement, it is a prerequisite that the direction of movement of the continuous casting takes place first through the horizontally arranged rolls and then through the vertically arranged pair.
  • a holddown roll is mounted on the frame member intermediate the horizontally and vertically arranged rolls.
  • the holddown roll is adjustably actuated by a member, such as a hydraulically adjustable device, for properly positioning and applying force to the casting as it passes between the two pairs of rolls.
  • a member such as a hydraulically adjustable device
  • Another valuable feature of the invention is the interchangeability of the horizontal and vertical rolls with their support arms and adjusting members.
  • repair work can be quickly carried on the form changing device without any appreciable loss of time.
  • the adjusting members for the horizontally and vertically arranged rolls can be arranged to be actuated only in mutual dependence. In such an arrangement, if the horizontally arranged rolls are moved apart then the vertically arranged rolls are also rearranged in a similar fashion. In positioning the horizontally and vertically arranged rolls, each pair is aligned with the center of the continuous casting by an adjusting cylinder or similar arrangement.
