' RUBBER BOOT. No. 352,501. Patented Nov, 9, 1886.

JAMES L. TYLER, Jn, or soM RvrLLn, MASSACHUSETTS.
RUBBER BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.'352,501, datedNovember 9, 1886.
Application filed May 14, 1886. Serial No. 202,131. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES L. TYLER, J r., of Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rubber Boots, of which the fol: lowing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in
explaining its nature.
The invention is an improvement upon that.
described in my Patent No. 333,256, dated February 2, 1886. In said invention I described a rubber boot having a foot portion of usual thickness and a leg portion of gossamer or other thin water-proof fabric of sufficient size to readily admit the foot of the wearer, and to the sides orother portion of the legs were attached tworows of devices, wher eby the leg of the boot could be made to fit the leg of the wearer; and the present invention relates to a method of constructing this leg portion and providing the necessary stays for holding the studs, hooks, rings, or other lacing or fastening devices for fitting the leg of the boot to the leg of the wearer, and this result I obtain by cutting two pieces from the prepared stock, one shaped to form the back and sides of the bootleg, and the other the front. These sec- 0 tions are provided with edges or extensions, which are brought together and united by vulcanization or by cementto form two stays, which serve to securely hold the lacing hooks, rings, studs, eyelets, or other fastenings employed. Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a boot having the features of my invention. Fig. 2 shows in horizontal section the parts of the leg before they are secured together, and Fig. 3 is a section on the same line, showing them united. Fig. 4. is a detail View.
when united the proper shape. 'The section b comprises the back and side sections of the boot, and the section b the front section. They are cut sufficiently full or large to enable their edges to be brought together to unite the parts and form the stays O O, and, preferably, the raw edge of one section is finished by the overlapping of the edge of the other section. The extent to which these edges are lapped or joined varies according to the size of the boot and the fastenings used and the strength required.
In the drawings, I have represented each edge of the back section as turned over the edges of the front section to provide a finish. These two sections, joined together in this way, provide very strong stable stays, and to these stays are secured the fastening devices, which may be in the nature of rings, hooks, eyelets, or studs, or other device adapted to be used with a lacing-cord.
Of course the front section, b, is made sufficiently full to allow the foot of the wearer to be readily inserted, either with or without a leather slipper or shoe, and upon lacing the leg of the boot to the leg of the wearer the stays are broughttoward each other, and gather the section b between them.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improved article of manufacture, a
