JOHN L. Manns, or BROOKLYN, Nnw YORK.
ADJUSTABLE FOLDING SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,480, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed May 4, 1885. Serial No. 164,324. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. MEEKs, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Folding Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to that kind of spring bed-bottoms in which volute or spiral springs are employed to produce. the necessary elasticity, said springs being held in their positions by suitable means.
My invention has for its object to produce a spring bed-bottom capable of adjustment in width, and that can be folded, rolled, or narrowed up, and thereby made to occupy less room for the purpose of shipping, storing, handling, or transportation. Suitable means are provided to keep said bed-bottom at the required width when opened, and also to keep the same closed when rolled or narrowed up.
My invention will be set forth in the following description and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a plan view of myimproved adjustable folding spring bed-bottom; Fig. 2, a side View when Open; Fig. 3, an end view showing the bedfbottom extended and attached to the bedframe; Fig. 4, a view of the spring bed-bottom when closed; Fig. 5, an end view when rolled up. Fig. isamodication showing the crossstrips formed of a number of coiled springs instead of a single coiled spring.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several Views.
The bed-bottom consists of strips a, of wood or metal, extending lengthwise with a bedstead, and' may rest on the bed-slats or be otherwise connected to the bedsframewhen in use. The strips c are connected together, as shown, by coil-springs C, fastened to strips a, and of one continuous coil of wire extending from side to side of the bed-botto1n,or of a number of coils fastened to and between the strips c. These coils are shown at F, Fig. 6, fastened to strips a, and are practically a continuous coiled-spring strip, such as C, extending from side to side of the bed-bottom. In lieu of the coiled springs' C, any equivalent elastic strip may be employed which serves the same purpose-viz., which is both flexible and extensible. By means of these springs or flexible cross-connecting pieces or strips the bed-bottom can not only be adjusted laterally to fit a bed-frame, but can also be rolled up in the smallest possible compass. Volute or spiral sp rings C are riveted or otherwise fastened to the strips a, and so arranged as to form no obstacle to the adjustment or foldingup of the bed-bottom.
The springs C are connected together by chains, springs, or cords in any suitable manner. To the top of the outer row of springs, C', on each side is secured a strip, b, to brace the .bedbottom, having pivoted arms d, of metal or wood, which, when thebed-bottom is folded up, lie lengthwise with the strips b, so as to be out of the way, and when the bed-bottom is in use are turned out and engage the adjacent coil, thereby preventing the strips b from tilting.
{[he bed-bottom is held in place and securedV to the adjusted width by arms c, pivoted to the outer strips, (t, and having a slot by which they are secured to a button or pin on the bedframe. These arms chave also a double function in securing the bed-bottom when rolled new; but I am not aware that bed-bottoms combining by means of coiled springs both of these features are old.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is as follows:
1. A bed-bottom composed of volute springs and slats, connected together by coiled springs, so as to be adjusted laterally or rolled up, substantially as described.
2. A bed-bottom consisting of slats having volute springs, the slats being connected together by coiled springs, so that they can be adjusted laterally or rolled up, and means,
