Description

(No Model.)
A. W. BRIGHTWELL.
COVER FOR JARS.
Patented Nov. 9, 1886.
wil \Ill' WITNESSES Attorneys INITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
AMAZON WI BRIGHTWELL, OF OWEN, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MARTIN M. ALLHANDS, OF SAME PLACE.
COVER FOR JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,392, dated November 9, 1886.
Application filed April 16, 1886. Serial No. 199,069. (No model.)
' To all whom) it may concern:
dent of Owen, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Crooks, Jars, or Similar- Articles; and I do hereby de clare that thefollowingis a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part .of this specification, and in which Figure l is a perspective view of a milkcrock provided with my improved cover. Fig. 2 is a vertical. sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the cover removed from the crock.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to that class of covers for crooks, jars, or similar articles in which two arms have downwardly and inwardly bent lips, which may engage the under side of the flange upon the crock or article, retaining the cover; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates a crock or jar, which is formed with an outwardlyprojecting flange, B, around its upper edge.
O is the cover, which fits upon the flange and upper edge of thecrock, and this cover is provided with a central knob, D, having two diametrically-opposite lugs, E E, upon the lower end of the knob and upon the surface of the cover.
The inner bifurcated ends,'F, of two arms, G G, are'pivoted upon transverse pins to these lugs, and the outer ends of these arms are bent downward, as shown at H, and provided at the lower ends of these downwardly-bent portions with inwardly-bent lips I I, which engage the under side of the flange around the top of the crock, and with outwardly-projeoting short lips J J, for the convenient manipulation of the arms.- 7
Flat springs K K are secured to the inner ends of the arms and bear with their free outer ends against the top of the cover, causing the inwardly-bent lips to be drawn firmly up against the flange ofthe crock, binding the cover to the top of the crock.
When it is desired to remove the cover, the arms may be swung upward, the downwardly- ;projecting portions of the arms having sufficient elasticity to allow of the lips being drawn out from under the flange, and the arms will spring upward, after the lips have been released, by the action of the flat springs under the arms.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States In combination with a crock or similar article or vessel having a flange around its upper edge, a cover having'a knob at its center formed with diametrically-opposite lugs, arms pivoted with their bifurcated inner ends upon the lugs, and having downwardly-bent portions formed with inwardly-projecting lips for engaging the flange of the vessel and outward- 1y: projecting manipulating lips, and flat springs secured to the inner ends of the arms and bearing against the upper side of the cover, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affiXed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
