. ATENT SASH-FASTE NER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,355, dated November 9, 1886.
, Application filed June 25, 1886. Serial No. 206,239. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANK L. RosENTnETER, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looks for Meeting- Strips for Window-Sashes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved window-sash meeting-rail fastener applied to portions ofthe meeting rails of two sashes. Fig. 2 is a vertical transversesection through the center of the device when locked.
Fig. 3 is asimilar view indicating the position.
of the parts when unlocked. Fig. 4 isa bottom view of the case, showing the internal parallel guides for the locking-bolt. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the cap, showing its central pivotal post, its tud, and inclined flange. Fig. 6 isa perspectivebottom view of the bolt.
This invention relates to improvements on devices which are applicable to the meetingrails of window-sashes, and designed for looking together the sashes, and the object of my improvements is not only to lock the meetingrails, butat thesame time to draw them firmly together to prevent leakage, and also to force them vertically,-so that they will not rattle. These objects I accomplish by the device which will be fully understood from the following description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates part of the meeting-rail of the upper window-sash, and A part of the meeting-rail of the lower sash To the rail A, at or near the middle of its length, I rigidly secure a keeper or guard, B, the horizontal bar a of which is under-beveled, as shown clearly in Fig. 2, and located in front of an aperture, to. This keeper will be again referred to.
B designates the case of my locking-bolt, which is constructed with ears I) b, perforated to receive screw-fastenings; also with acentral hole, I), vertically through it, and also with two parallel guides, 12 b equidistant from said hole b.
(J designates the circular base of the case,
which is fitted'loosel y therein and constructed with a central pivotal post,c, having asquared upper end. This circular base 0 is also constructed. with a flanged, rising from its outer u edge and extending about one third around the same, its upper edge being inclined, as shown in Fig. 5. Inside of this inclined concentric flange 0, and between it and the pivotal post 0, is a short stud, 0 the object of which and the flange will be hereinafter explained.
D designates the looking-bolt, which is conshaped groove,e, at thejunction of the tapered portion df, in rear of which is anotch, f, formed in the limb d, on opposite sides of which are shoulders g g. l/Vhen the parts B, O, and D, which are each cast entire, are put together, the stud c on the bascO is received in the notch f, between the two shouldersg g ofthe limb d of shank d of the bolt. through the central hole, I), of the case B, and receives on its squared end a handle, E,which may be confined in its place by riveting the end of the post, or in any other convenient manner. This handle E is constructed with a flat downwardly-curved grasping portion, and with a shoulder, h, which is adapted to serve as a stop to limit the circular movements of this handle by contact with the sides bb of the lockcase. \Vhen the windows are shut, the handle E is turned in one direction, which shoots the bolt out straight for a short distance toward the keeper A. By continuing the movement of the handle in the same direction the inclined flange c on the base-plate O enters the arcshaped groove cm the bottom of the bolt and forcibly raises the lip of the latter against the under-beveled side of the cross-bar a, and not only draws the meeting rails together, but also forces the sashes vertically in opposite directions to prevent rattling thereof, and locks them securely. The inclined tapered lip on the bolt acts as a powerful wedge against the keeperbar a, and rigidly holds the two sashes in their frame. By turning the handle E in an oppo- The post a protrudes site direction the inclined flange c at first allows the front end of the bolt to drop by its own weight free from the keeper-bar a, after which the stud on the base-plate retracts the nose of the bolt within, its case and allows the window-sash to be moved.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, in a meeting-rail lock, of a keeper-bar on one of the meeting-rails, a lock-case on the opposite rail provided with bolt-guides, a bolt having a bifurcated shank, an upturned tapered locking lip,an arcshaped groove, and two shoulders formed on one of the limbs of the bolt-shank, and a circularlylnovable base-plate having a central post extending through thelock-case,an inclined concentric flange adapted to lift the front end of the bolt, and a stud for protruding and retracting the latter, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the 1ock-case and circularly-movable base-plate, constructed as described, of a bolt constructed with an upturned tapered lip, shoulders, and an arcshaped groove, whereby the bolt while being shot will be raised and caused to engage with a keeper-bar, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the lock-case provided with guides for a bolt, of a bolt having an upturned lip and two shoulders on one of its limbs, a circularly-movable base having a bolt throwing and retracting stud, and also an inclined bolt-lifting flange, and a handle secured on the post of this base, having a stop adapted to abut against the sides of the lockcase, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
