J. M. MARKHAM.
GALF WEANBR.
No. 352,336. Patented Nov. 9,1886.
N. versus, FhomLnhognphar. Washington. n.0,
I I NiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACKSON M. MARKHAM, OF l/VILLIAMSVILLE, MISSOURI.
CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,336, dated November 9, 1886.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AOKSON M. lVIARKHAM, of Williamsville, in the county of Wayne and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oalf-Vveaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the inven ject to furnish a device of this kind which will be simple in construction and effective in use for weaning calves and other young domestic animals.
It consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, and specifically designated in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a calf with my complete device properly arranged upon its head. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 00 x of Fig. 2, showing the arrangement of the barns. Fig. 4 is a detail top plan view of the adjnstablenoseclamp. Fig. 5 is a section of the same, taken on line 3 y of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the nose-barb and its adjustable attachingplate. Fig. 7 is a detail section taken on line a z of Fig. 2, showing the adjustable plate, its slot, and regulating-screw. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view of one of the same, taken on line 2 z of Fig. 2; and Fig. 9 is a sectional detail view of one'of the barbs with its springactuated shields, taken on line y y, Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A is the muzzle, having the neck-yoke B and the face-strap G.
D is the semicircular nose-bow,consisting of the curved sheet-metal plate 0, the curved strap a, and the lip or curb strap b, the straps to and b being made of one continuous piece of leather, as shown in Fig. 3. The portion a, however, is given a set shape or form by the curved under strip or plate of metal 0, riveted to said strap a, as shown in section in Fig. 7,
and the nose-bowbeing provided on each inner side with a barb, E.
Centrally on the strap a is secured the metal plate a, armed with a barb, E, and having the longitudinal slot d in its upper portion. This plate is attached or fastened between the leather (1 and the sheet metal a by a suitable screw, f, which is supported by a small bracket plate, f, riveted to strap 0, as shown in Fig. 8, said screw passing through plate f, the slot (1, the strap 0, and the clamping-nut g onthe under side of the strap 0, as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. the object of this construction allowing the plate 0 to be longitudinally adjusted.
On the under side of the strap 0, and in front or back of the not 9, is cent-rally arranged the leather or metal loop h, which acts as a hinge or pivot for the snap-hook t, from which is suspended the adjustable nose-clamp F. This clamp F is designed to fitin the nostrils of the animal, thereby insuring the security of the muzzle. It consists of two curved arms, j K, each provided with balls or tips j k at their outward or free ends, said armsv being dovetailed orjoined together in the following manner, viz: The arm K, at its inner end, is made rectangular in shape, and provided with a recess, it, having the inclined sides or walls, as
shown. rectangular in shape, and is formed with a central longitudinal slot, m, and slides easily in the recess a of the arm K, as shown in Fig. 5. 0
The inner end of the arm j is also that-when the screw G is loosened the clampbut as many may be used as is found desirable.
These barbs consist each of a cylindrical socket, 0, having the base-plate 0 formed integral therewith, which forms .a seat both for the spur or barb B, centrally riveted in the base-plate 0', and the coiled spring P. The shield Q is also of cylindrical shape, and fits easily within the socket O, and is provided with an exterior flange, q, and an interior shoulder, r, which is designedto engage with a pin, 8, which projects through one side of the socket O, the object of which construction is to prevent the normal tendency or pressure of the spring from pressing the shield too far out of its socket, and the said shield is kept from being depressed too far by the circumferential flange q. This construction of barb I find most advisable to use; but I do not wish to confine myself to the use of this before-described barb, nor to lay any claim thereto, since it forms part subject-matter of another application now pending in the United States Patent Oliice filed September 18, 1886, Serial No. 213,878, for eattle-prieker belts.
R is any suitable buckle or strap for securing the face-strap O to the nose-bow D, and S isa like fastening for the ends of the curbstrap b and nose-strap a.
The neck-yoke B is riveted to the face-strap C, and attached at its lower end to the lip or curb strap, as shown in-Fig. 2.
The operation of my invention may be briefly described as follows: The muzzle is arranged on the head of the calf, as shown in Fig. 1,with the tips of the nose-clamp in the nostrils and the nose-bow and barbs in position. Should the calf then attempt to feed from its mother it would necessarily have to poke its nose forward and against the udder, which would, depress the flexible plate c, carrying the barb E againstits nose. Consequently the spring-actuated shield of the barb would be depressed, thereby exposing the spur or barb-rod and prod the nose of the calf.
It will be obvious that by making the sev- The barbs on the eral parts of the device adjustable the device can be arranged upon any-sized calf or other animal where my invention would be ofservice.
having a barb on its inner front end, and the L adjustable noseclamp suspended from said nose-bow, as set forth.
2. The muzzle provided with the semicircular nose-bow armed with barbs on its inner side,
and the curved adjustable central front plate having barbs, said barbs being provided with spring-actuated shields, in combination with the adjustable nose-clamp, as set forth.
3. A calf-weaner consisting of the yoke, the face-strap, lip or curb strap, the nose-bow provided with barbs on its inner side, the adjustable curved central front plate, also provided with a barb, and means for attaching said parts together, as described, in combination with an adjustable nose-clamp suspended from said nose-bow, in the manner described.
4. The nose-clamp consisting of two curved arms having a tip at each of their outer ends and adj ustably secured together in the middle, in the manner shown, in combination with a nose-bow having barbs arranged on its inner side and the curved adjustable central front plate, also provided with barbs, as set forth.
5. In a ealf-weaner, the combination of the adjustable nose-clamp with a muzzle having a nose-bow provided with barbs on its inner side, arranged as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JACKSON M. MARKHAM.
