spr.A cRoWELL.
ANIMAL MUZZLE.
Patented Aug. 29,1876.
N. PEEIS, GRA PHER, WASHINGTON. D CV UNITEDl STATEs PATENT CDEEIcEo SCOTT F. OROWELL, OF OTTO, YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANIMAL-MUZZLES.
Speeication forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,560, dated August 29, 1876; application tiled April 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ScoTT F. CROWELL, of Otto, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of N ew York, have invented certain Improvements in Cattle Rings and Muzzles, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to the combination of a cattle ring and muzzle in such a way that it may be used for the purpose of leading cattle, or as a muzzle to prevent them from sucking. It consists in a plate of peculiar shape, to which two curved levers are pivoted. These levers terminate with balls at the outer ends which clasp in the nostrils of the animal, and the other ends terminate in points which stand nearly perpendicular to the said plate and parallel to each other, and are embraced by a suitable clasp, which retains the levers in position. The points mentioned are provided ,with a leather case, which is kept in place by means of a strap, which also-passes through a ring to which the strap for leading the animal is attached.
In the drawing, Figure lis a perspective view. Fig. 2 represents the muzzle in posi.- tion to apply to the animal.
A is a plate having a portion cut away at a. B B are curved levers pivoted at O C, terminatin g in balls at b b and points at c c, which are bent up at nearly right angles to the plate A. These points are embraced by the clasp D, which is held in place by the spring-key d, which passes through a post, e, attached to the plate A. E .is a leather case which covers the points c c when not in use. This case is held in place by the strap f, which passes through it and the plate A. When the device is used for leading cattle, a ring, to which a strap is attached, is buckled into the strap f.
It will be seen that when the device is placed in its proper position in the animals nose it may be used for leading, as Ordinary cattle-rin gs are used, and when it is desired to use it as a muzzle the leather case E is removed, and the points c c will effectually prevent sucking. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new.` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the plate A, levers B, (terminating in balls at b b and points at c 0,) and clasp D,'as shown and described.
2. The combination of the leather case E,
strap f, and points c c, as set forth.
