The stream of molten metal being located to impinge on the meniscus of the metal in the mold at its center.
- U.S. PATENT 3,522,835 METHOD OF FEEDING THE MOLTEN METAL INTO A CURVED MOULD The present invention relates to methods of supplying molten metal in continuous casting plants, and more particularly to methods of supplying the molten metal into a curved mold of continuous casting plants.
Methods are known of supplying molten metal into a curved mold, provided in continuous casting plants in such a manner that the meniscus of the molten metal is above the horizontal plane passing through the center of the mold curvature (see the Patent Specification No. 1173316 according to the class 1322a, granted in France).
The existing methods of the vertical supply of the molten metal stream into a curved mold do not result in a high-quality ingot, because the vertical supply of the stream of molten metal involves its displacement from the middle of the mold cavity, which results in washing away the skin of the solidifying metal nearest to the metal stream.
An object of the present invention is to provide such a method of supplying the molten metal into a curved mold which ensures the supply of the molten metal to the curved mold in a direction parallel with its working walls and in the middle of its cavity, to eliminate the washing away of the skin of the solidifying metal.
This object is achieved due to the fact that a method is employed of supplying the molten metal into the curved mold, provided in continuous casting plants in such a manner that the meniscus of the molten metal therein is above the horizontal plane passing through the center ofthe mold curvature and according to the present invention, the molten metal stream is directed into the meniscus center at an angle to the horizontal plane, allowing the stream to pass into the mold cavity along a curve equidistant from its working walls.
The angle of supply of the stream along the curve is defined by the position of a tangent to the curve passing in the middle of the cavity of the curved mold, the tangent being drawn through a point ofintersection ofthe lower face ofthe pouring nozzle with said curve at the center of the nozzle.
The present invention will become more fully apparent from a consideration of the following description of an exem plary embodiment thereof, taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, representing a schematic diagram featuring the supply of the molten metal into a curved mold, realized according to the present invention.
To supply the stream of the molten metal into a curved mold ll along the curve approximating a curve a-a" equidistant from its working walls b, a nozzle 2 is provided in an intermediate ladle 3 at an angle a to the horizontal plane The angle a for setting the nozzle 1 is defined by the positioning of a tangent H to the curve a-a, passing in the middle of the cavity of the curved mold 1, the tangent l-l being thereby drawn through a point m of intersection of the lower face n-n" of the nozzle 2 with the curve a-a.
The stream of the molten metal to be supplied from the nozzle disposed at an angle a therefore has a parabolic shape approximating that of the curve a-a", which eliminates the washing away of the skin of the solidifying metal by the molten metal stream.
The proposed method of supplying the molten metal is applicable in plants where the curved mold l is disposed relative to its center of curvature in such a manner that the meniscus d of the molten metal therein is above the horizontal plane c.
We claim:
l. A method for supplying a molten metal to a mold for use in continuous casting plants in which the inner walls of the mold define a curved molding cavity having a molten metal meniscus located above a horizontal plane passing through the center of curvature ofthe molding cavity, and a source of molten metal disposed above the mold, comprising positioning a discharge nozzle for the source of molten metal at an angle passing through said horizontal plane constituted by a tangent to a curve line extending equidistant of the mold walls defining the molding cavity passing through the point of intersection of the lower face of the nozzle and said equidistant curve line, and discharging the molten metal through the nozzle into the center of the meniscus allowing the metal to enter the molding cavity along a curve coinciding with a curved axis of the mold thus eliminating the washing away of the skin of the solidifying metal by the molten metal stream introduced into the mold.
