Be it known that I, ABNER W. BIsHoP, of Middlebury township, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Animal-Poke; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,- clear, and complete description thereof; v

Myinvention consists of the meansemployed in' attaching and securing the poke to'the neck of the animal, the several parts being constructed and arranged as hereinafter desoribed and shown in the following specification and drawings annexed, in'which v Figure 1 is a view of the poke, partlyin sec-L tion, parts being broken away. Fig. 2is a side view. Fig. 3is a section in the line x x, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detached section in line x/ x', Fig. 3.

In the drawings, A, Figs. 1 and`2, represents the bow of the poke, to which is hinged the guard B, Figs. 1 and 3, by means of the staple or loop C, or its equivalent, which passes through the bowand is secured by screw-nuts a on4 the ends of the loop, as seen in Fig. 1. This loop embraces the bar D of the plate E,

, so that the' giiard is hinged to the 'bow at O.

This guard B consists of two outer plates, E bei'ng the lower one and F theupper one, which plates are fasten'ed together by means of rods or. bolts G and studs G', or otherwise., Interposed between the two plates E and F is a block, H, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4. The rods' G, in passing from one plate to the other, eX- tend through this block H, and are riveted down on the outside of the two plates. The studs G' aid in securingthe p'lates together as 'they extend through from one plate to the other, andl are headed down on the plates'. The studs G' are provided with shoulders on which the inside of the plates are in contact for support at these points.

In the block H are tightly inserted the shanks of the Spear-points I, as Vseen in Fig.4, each one being surrounded by a spiral spring, J, Fig. 3. The spear points extend loosely through the slide K., Vwhich is so placed between the two plates E F as to move freely between them.

On the lower side of the slide is a shoulder,

L, Fig. 4, which extends the entire length of the slide. On the front of the plate E is a flange,-M, which forms the entire front-edge length of the plate, andis adapted to the shoulder L of the slide as a stop when the slide is moved out by the action ofethe Springs J.

It will be seen in Figs 3 and 4 that one end of the springs abuts against the block H,while the other end is in contact and pressing against the inside face of the slide K and holding it in the position to` cover the Spear-points, as seen in Fig. 4, with the shoulder Lof the slide lK in contact with and arrested by the flange back by the breast of the animal pressing the arm of the bow against the fence or wall attempted to bebreached. This action uncovers 'the Spear-points .by the moving back of the slide, and presents the Spear-points to the breast of the animal, pricking so sharply ,that it will'at once recede. This hacking of the beast removes the pressure upon the slide, which will then move out and cover over the Spear-points by the force of the Springs J on the inside of the slide, thereby relieving the animal lfrom the pricking of the Spear-points. From the end of the plate E extends astem, N, Figs. 1 and 2, having atthe free end aneek, a, with a collar or shoulder, b, at the end. The stem isjof sufficient length to pass through the bow-arm and be locked by the slide-plate O.

In attaching the poke to the animaPs neck the guard is turned down to the side of the arm. The arms are then spread apart on raising the guard to ad mit of the free end of the stem passing through the hole P, receiving the stem. therein, as seen in Fig. 1. The slide-plate O is attached to the side of one arm by means of screws or other devices in such way as to ad- I mit of the slide-plate'moving in the line of thel slot Q. i

Equidistant from the ends of the slot Q is a circular opening, R, in which the inner ends of the slots terminate. Around the stem of the serew S is a spiral spring, T, in the eavity of the poke-arln. One end of this spring is inipinged against the under side of the plate O, while the opposite end is on the bottoin of the eavity, as seen in Fig'. 1.

In looking the guard to the poke on the aniinal's neek, the stem N is, as stated, passed through the hole P in the arni, and the eollar b atthe enter end passes through the opening R in the plate O, so that thev neck a is in the opening in the plate, with the eollar b on the outside. On sliding the plate down the neek a will enter the slot, as seen in Fig. 2, which Will look orfasten the guard to the poke, as the eollar b is on the outside of the slide-plate with the neek in the slot; henee the guard cannot be separated from the bow Without spreading the arms, and this can-not be done until the slide-plate is moved, so that the eollar a will be in the eireular opening R.

The slide-plate O may be so arranged in its relation with the bow and its attachments as to be moved in either direetion, for the purpose of looking the stem N to the how. The spring T presses against the plate O with suffieient force to hold the plate in position when the eollar and neok a are in the said plate.

Vhat I elaiin as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the poke-bow A and the guard B, hing'ed at one end thereof to one arm of the bow, and provided With a stem, N, at the opposite end, having,`` a neek and eollar to extend through the aperture P of the other arni of the bow, of the slotted plate O and springT, arranged substantiallyas deseribed, for the pnrpose set forth.
