Description

` UNrTED STATES PATIENT OEEICE.
ROBERT F. SPANGENBERG, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR I ONE-FOURTH TO EMILE S. EOUYER, OF SAME PLACE.
FASTENING FOR WIRE STRAPPING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 352,159, dated November 9, 1886.
Application led January 26, 1886. Serial No. 189.872. (No model.)
, Wire Strapping; VandI do declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art-to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to means for securing the ends of wire strapping to each other and to the box, case, caddy, barrel, bale, or other receptacle about which such strapping is wrapped.
The object of my invention is to produce a secure and economi cal fastening, and one which can be estalolishedwith but comparatively little expenditure of time and labor. In the accomplishment of this result I avail myself of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure Iillustrates the ends ofrwire straprping lapped in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates my preferred form of fastening-staples. Fig. 3 illustrates one manner of securing the 'ends of the strapping together. Fig. I represents a modification thereof, and Fig. 5 represents a box secured by strapping fastened in accordance with both the modifications shown in the preceding figures.
Similar letters indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
A A indicate wire strapping, adapted to be fastened around a box or other receptacle, as shown in Fig. 5. The opposite ends of these wire straps lap or pass by each other, and each is bent reversely to the other in the shape of a shepherds crook, B. The crook ends are fastened to each other and to the receptacle by means of staples F, provided with barbed or pointed ends C D. As illustrated in Fig. 3
and at the left in Fig. 5, these staples may be driven over only the two straight strands or thicknesses of-the wire' through the eye of the crook; or, as illustrated in Fig. 4, and at'the right in Fig. 5, may each include the said strands and one of the bent portions or crooks, embracing each at its'neck, in which case a broader staple, H, is employed. An additional staple, G, may be used for greater security, if so desired.
The Wire strapping used by me and shown in the drawings is preferably a treble strand of malleable metal. The number of strands may, however, vary as desired from a single one to six or more.
I am aware that it has been -proposed to fasten single or double strands of wire strapping to the receptacle itself, in the case of single wire by a nail having an extended head or lug to pass over the wire when drawn to position, and in the case of double strands by means of headed nails driven through openings made by separating said strands. I do not intend, therefore, to be understood as claiming such matter; but v What I do claim, and desire, to secure by Letters Patent, `isl. The combination, with a box or other receptacle, of a band comprising a wire strand or cable having at each lapped end a bend in the shape of a shepherds crook, and of staples,
each embracing vone lap and a portion of the crook of the other lap, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a box or other receptacle, of a band comprising a wire strand or cable, having at each lapped end a bend in the shape of ashepherds crook, and of staples, each embracing one lap, and the entire crook of the'other lap at its neck, substantially as described.
In testimonywhereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses. f
ROBERT E. SPANGENBEEG.
