HITCHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming-part of Letters Patent No. 352,039, dated November 2, 1886.

Be it known that'l, MICHAEL CARROLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plankinton, in the county of Aurora and Territory of Dakota, have invented anew and useful Improvement in-Hitehing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for hitching horses and other animals; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective viewof a hitchingdevice embodying my improvements, showing the manner of attaching the strap thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my hitching device with the strap detached therefrom.
A represents a metallic plate, which is provided atone end with a transverse open slot,B, thereby leaving a transverse arm, 0, which is arranged parallel with the said slot. At a suitable distance from the slot B, and arranged parallel therewith and extending in the opposite'direction therefrom, is a similar transverse slot, D. Near the outer end of the plate is made a transverse open slot, E, which is parallel with the slots B and D, and is open on the same side with the slot B, thereby forming a bar, F, which extends transversely across the outer endofthe frame. From the outer end of this bar extends an arm,G,which curves upwardly from the said bar, and extends parallel with one side of the plate A and at a suitable distance above the outer end of the slot E,
, thereby forming a guiding-arm to direct the strap into the slot E and prevent the strap from working out of the said slot. Through that portion of the plate A between the slots B and D extends a transversepivotal rod, H,
the ends of which project beyond the sides of the plate and form trunnions or bearings h, upon which are pivoted the ends of a curved loop or clevis, I. If preferred, the said trunnions h may be cast .with or formed integrally with the plate A. The clevis I passes through the eye k of a threaded bolt, K. The function of this bolt is to secure the hitching device to the manger hitching-post or other suitable object.
, The operation of my invention is as follows: The hitching-strap L is first doubled at one end for a suitable distance, according to the length of the strap, and the looped end of the strap is passed over the arm 0 and in the slot B, and the strap is then caused to enter the slot B. From thence it is caused to enter the slot E, being bent to enable it to pass under the arm G. When the strap is thus secured to the hitching device, it will be seen that the doubled portions of the strap bear against each other from the slot E to the slot B, thus offering excessive friction and preventing the strap from being withdrawn fromthe hitching device by any pull upon the outer end thereof, no matter how powerful. The greater the strain exerted upon the strap the more firmly the doubled end thereof is caused to bear against itselfand againstthe plate.
A hitching device thus constructed is cheap and simple, is very strong and durable, and enables the strap to be attached thereto in a very short time and without the necessity of buckling the strap, thus permitting the strap to be secured to the hitching device very V readily even in cold weather of the utmost severity,aud without obliging the person hitch ing the horse to remove his gloves.
Having thus described my invention, I cl'aim 1. In a hitching device, the plate A, having the arm 0 at one end, the slot B, parallel with the said arm, open on one side of said plate, the slot D, parallel with the slot B and open on the opposite side of the plate, the open slot E, parallel with the slots B and D and open on the same side with the slot B, and the guard-arm G, arranged above the outer end-of the slot E, for the purpose set forth, substan tially as described.
