WILLIAM H. MCOUMBER, OF TRENTON, MISSOURI.
SWIVELED CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,772, dated May 26, 1885.
Application filed May 29, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, W ILLIAM I-I. MOUUMRER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Trenton, in the county of Grundy and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swiveled Olevises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to Which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved swiveled clevis. Fig. 2is a horizontal sectional view of the same, and Fig.3 is a de' tail view showing in perspective the parts composing my improved clevis detached from each other.
for plows, carriages, and the like; and it has for its object to provide a device in which the swinging movement of the traces and single trees caused by turning or by unevenness ofthe ground shall be obviated.
To this end it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the main clevis, which consists, principally, of a bail formed either of sheet or wrought metal, and the ends of which are provided with perforations B to receive a spring-key, O, by means of which the said clevis may be attached to the double-tree carrying the device. The head or bent portion of the clevis A is provided with a struck-up opening, D, around which in the process of manufacture a flange, E, is formed.
F designates the swivel-clevis, which is constructed, mainly, like the clevis A-that is, it is provided with openings at the ends of its arms for the reception of a spring-key, G, and it has at its inner end or head a perforation or opening, H, to receive the flange E of the clevis A.
I is a bolt or rivet, which connects the two (No model.)
clevises, and under the swaged end of which a washer, J, may be interposed.
The operation of this invention is as follows: The main clev is Ais attached or connected by means of its spring-key to the double-tree of the plow or other vehicle to which the device is to be applied. The singletrees are hitched into or pivotally connected to the clevis F by means of the spring-key G. It will thus be seen that the single-trees have distinctly swivelcd motion in relation to the double-tree, which is not afforded by the devices now in common use; hence, when a tnrning point is reached, or when the plow or vehicle has to pass over uneven ground, the swinging motion of the double-tree, which in customary devices is not only annoying to the driver, but harassing to the animals, is completely avoided.
By the construction herein described, which embraces a flange or collar formed upon the main clevis, and entering a perforation in the swivelcd clevis F, friction is avoided, and a successful operation of the device is thus at all times insured.
I am aware that barrow-couplings have been constructed prior to my invention consisting of two U-shaped heads or jaws extending in opposite directions and united by a pivot-pin, as shown in the patent to Lynch, No. 258,782, May 30, 1882. I am also aware that couplings have been formed with tubular extensions, upon which other parts may be pivoted. Such devices I do not claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a swivel-clevis, the combination of abail, A, having opening D, surrounded by a struckup flange, E, with a bail, F, having opening H, and a connecting bolt or rivet, I, and washer J, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM H. MOGUMBER.
