UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
a MARQUIS nsnELEY, or FREMONT, NEBRASKA.
HOPPER.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 352,008, dated November 2, 1886.
Application filed December 9, 1885. Serial No. 185,113. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARQUIS F. SEELEY, of Fremont, in the State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hoppers; and it consists in the matters hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
A hopper embodying the main feature of my invention is provided in its part adjacent to its exit-openin g with vertical. faces or walls arranged in opposition to inclined faces or walls sloping to the exit-opening, whereby liability of the latter to become stopped or choked by the bridging over or wedging together of theimaterial approaching the opening is obviated, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
A hopper embodying my invention is herein shown as applied to a corn sheller; but the novel features of constructionherein illustrated and claimed may be employed as well in hoppers adapted for use upon other machines, or for other purposes than for feeding material to a machine.
The invention may be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a coru-sheller with a hopper embodying my invention attached, the latter being shown in central vertical section. Fig. 2 is a'plan view of the part of the hopper adjacent to the exit-opening. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the same.
In the said drawings, A is' a hopper, and B is a corn-sheller, to which it is shown as attached. The said hopper, which in the particular form thereof shown is square in plan view, is provided at two adjacent sides of its exit opening with vertical walls A A, the walls A A of the hopper opposite said walls A A being arranged to slope downwardly to the exit-opening in the usual manner. The
vertical walls A A will usually extend about a foot or afoot and ahalf abovethelower margins of the opposite walls A A the inclined walls A A at thesides of the bin adjacent to and above the vertical walls A A being constructed to slope downwardly to the upper edges of the said vertical walls in an obvious manner.
In the operation of a hopper constructed as above described the ears of corn or other material resting against the vertical walls will 0bviously tend to move orslide freely downward, so that the catching or wedging of the material cannot happen by reason of its becoming arched over between opposing inclined walls, as
is liable to occur when the latter are present.
A preferred construction in means for connecting wooden hopper-walls with the metal casing of a corn-sheller or other machine, or with a spout or passage with which the hopper communicates, whereby asimple and convenient construction of the parts is obtained, is herein illustrated, and is as follows: C is a metal casting adapted for attachment, by bolts or otherwise, to the margins of the inlet-opening of the corn-sheller B, or other machine, or to a spout, said casting being rectangular in plan view and provided at two of its sides with vertical parts 0, extending above the flange or horizontal portion 0 of the casting, and forming the vertical walls A A of the hopper.
In constructing the wooden parts of the hopper two of the inclined walls thereof, as A A are j oined at their lower margins with thelower horizontal parts of the casting, and the two opposite walls A A extend to and abut at their lower edges against the upper edges of the vertical parts 0 of said casting. The said walls A A A A may be sustained or supported in proper position with relation to the casting G in any manner found convenient or desirable.
In constructing the wooden parts of the hopper, when acasting, O, of the form described is used, the two triangular spaces at the outer vertical edges of the walls 0 may be filled by triangular pieces of plank c, as shown, or by triangular extensions cast upon the walls 0.
I claim as my invention- 1. A hopper provided with inclined side walls and having in its lower part, adjacent to its exit-opening, opposite vertical and inclined surfaces made continuous with the said inclined side walls, substantially as described.
2. A hopper provided at its part adjacent to its exit-opening with two vertical walls at conof a hopper, of a metal part, 0, consisting of a tiguous sides of the opening and having in horizontal part, 0 made square in plan, and olined walls A A, sloping to the exit-opening two vertical side walls, 0, substantially as deat the sides of the hopperopposite the said verscribed. I 5 tical walls, and walls A" A terminating at In testimonythatIclaimthe foregoing asmy their lower edges at the top margins of the said invention I affix my signature in presence of vertical walls, substantially as described. two witnesses.
3. The combination, with the wooden walls MARQUIS F. SEELEY. of a hopper, ofa metal part, 0, having two ver- W'itnesses: 1o tical side walls, 0, substantially as described. 0. CLARENCE POOLE,
4. The combination, with the wooden walls M. E. DAYTON.
