J. R. HABE. WATCH PENDANT Bow. No. 351,977.
Wl-V NEIEEE-.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B.. BARE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
WATCH-PENDANT BOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,977, dated November 2, 1886.
Application led May i7, 1886. Serial No. 202,348.
To all whom it may colwcrni Be it known that I, JOHN R. HARE, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain Improvements in Watch- Icndant Bows, of which the following is a specification.
To fully understandv the nature` of my improvements it must be known that before my present invention there were only two methods known ol' securing the bow to the pendantviz., that of attaching the ends of the bow to the pendant by means of a screw or rivet and that of springing the bow into its sockets. The iirstnarned means of fastening cannot be employed in stem-winding watches, and in the latter, in order to keep the bow iirmlyin place by its inherent elasticity, the bow or ring must be properly hardened, and even when the ring is hardened and made elastic its detachment is easily accomplished, and this is particularly so when the upper part of the bow becomes worn and reduced in thickness.
My present invention consistsin making` the ring or bow with its ends separated to such a distance as will admit of the said ends being easily inserted in the sockets formed in the pendant without the ring being further opened or sprung out of shape, and in connecting the said ends by means of a brace, which is bent or curved after the ends of the bow are opposite the sockets, to draw them together, and to the bottom ofthe sockets.
In the further description of my said invention which follows reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure I is a rear view of a watchcase provided with my improvements. Fig. II is a i'ront View ofthe same, with certain parts thereof shown in section. Fig. III is an edge View ofthe watch-case, with its bow and bracing device shown in section. Figs. IVand V are views of the bow and its brace, showing their relative positions before and after the attachment of the former to the watch-pendant.
A is the watch-case proper, and B and C are respectively the pendant and the bow.
(No model.)
F is the brace which connects together the ends ofthe bow. In Figs. I and II one end of the brace is soldered to the bow, and the other end is secured to the bow by means of a screw, a. If desired, both ends of the brace can be attached to the bow by means of solder without the aid of rivets or screws. In Fig. IV the bow is shown with its ends distended sufficiently to enable them' to enterthesockets without distention, and with the brace straight. To close the ends ofthe bow in their sockets it is only necessary to bend the brace by means of a pair of pliers of suitable shape, as shown in Fig. V.
Bows provided with my invention can be made of much lighter wire than those which are sprung into place and depend on their inherent stiffness to retain them in position. It will be seen that in bending the brace to draw in the ends of the bow sufficientspace is formed for the crown Eon the winding-stem D.
I am aware that bows for watch pendants have been provided with straight bars, which are united to the bows at points which are at some considerable distance from their ends, to prevent the chain-swivel coming in contact with the crown of the stem; but such bars are intended to not interfere with or prevent the springing of the bow over the pendant to enable its ends to enter the sockets therein.
I claim as my inventionvI. In combination with the bow of a watchpendant, a stiffening bar or brace within the same extending practically from one end of the bow to the other, substantially as and t'or` the purpose specied.
2. In combination with the bow ot' a watchpendant, an upwardlycurved stitfening bar or brace secured within the bow and extending practically from one end ot the same to the other, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN E. HAEE.
