SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,899, dated November 2, 1886.

Application flled October 21, 1885. Serial No. 180,515 (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, JULIA A. OALLAHAN,

'of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State clear, and exact description.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts andldctails, as will be f ully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure' 1 is a perspective view of my improved restaurant'and theater chair. Fig. 2 is a detail side view of a clothes-holdinghook of a modified construction.

The chair A isin general of the usual-construction, and to the legs a frame, B, is secured below the seat,which frame B has a railing,..E,at the sides and rear. The said frame serves as a support for the hat D of the person occupying the chair, or for bundles, books, &c.

' v To one of the rear legs a drip cup, F, is fastened for the purpose of receiving the lower end of'annmbrella-stick or a cane and catching the-d rip-water from the umbrella. A Loop or bow-1G, is either fixed or pivoted to the'chairback, and serves to hold the upper part of the stick of the umbrella H.

A curved lever, K, is pivoted to one of the uprights L or side pieces of the chair-back at or near the middle of said lever. When the inner end of the lever K is swung down, the outer end is raised and does not project from the sides of thechair-back, and thus is out of the way. When a garment is held on the chair-back,the said lever Kis swung down, so

that its outer end projects from the side of the chair-back, the inner end resting against the inner edge of the side of the chair-back, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thus preventing the outer end from swinging down too far. The garment is then passed over the outer end of the lever K and supported by the same.

An angle-lever, M, is pivoted on one front leg, N. When not in use, the outer shank is swung up against the, said leg and the inner shank is-swung down, as shown in full linesin Fig. 1, and the lever is thus out of'the way. When a garment is hung on the chair, the outer arm or shank of the lever M is swung down, and the lower part of the garment placed on it to prevent the said lower part of the gar mentfrom coming in contact withthe floor and being soiled.

In place of the curved lever K and the angle-lever M, I may provide shafts P,provided with hook-shaped arms Q, and acted upon by spiral springs R, which throw the said arm Q against the side of the chair 'or against the back as soon as the garment is removed. The levers K and M operate in a similar manner, as their inner ends are weighted to swing down as soon as .the garment is removed.

Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, in a chair, of a garment knob or button, J,0n the top of the chair-back, the hook or support K, pivoted to the side of the chair-back, and the hook or support M, pivoted to the chair near its lower end, sub- .stantial] y as set forth.
