UNIT STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID FBEED, OF HUNTINGDON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOlLET-FU RNITU RE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 10,030, dated September 20, 1853.
$0 mil whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID FREED, of Huntingdoin-in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to bee. full, clear, and exact, description of the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making a part thereof, imwhich- Figure 1 represents a front View of 'a washstand with the improvement in question attached, and Fig. 2 a top view of the same.
Similar letters in both the figures denote like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in attaching curved brackets or arms to the bottom of a wash-stand or any other toilet or household furniture, against which brackets afriction bolt or bar is thrown by a crank or knob near the top of the piece of furniture, the shape of the bracket conforming to the heel of the foot whichis to be placedtherein, and the object of the invention beingtocatch and hold the bottom of pantaloons, for the purpose of drawing them 0d without stooping or sitting down.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe the same with reference to the drawings, in which I have represented the device as attached to a wash-stand, but which is equally applicable to any other chamber-furniture'.
A represents a wash-stand of common con struction, near the bottom of which, on either or both sides, are permanently attached the brackets or curved arms B, the convexside next the washstand, and the concave side made to conforin to the shape of the heel of the foot. A bolt or bar, 0, that part of it which is within the stand being represented in redlines) extends across from side to side of the stand, sov that when not in use it is entirely concealed wit" the frame. In the top of the bolt is a s night rack, D, into which loosely works a segment rack, E, on a vibrating lever, which is pivoted at G. The top of the lever F is slotted at a, in which slot works a frictionroller, b, placed on a wrist-pin, 0, attached to the extreme end of the lever H. The leverH is hung on a shaft, d, and on the same shaft is placed the hand-crank I, by the turning of which the bolt 0 is thrown out against the brackets B on one side or the other, as may be desired.
To use this device it is only necessary to place the heel within the bracket, the lower part of the pantaloons being on the opposite side thereof, and by turning thehand or thumb crank I it is caught and held until the leg is drawn without the necessity of stooping, which to invalids is sometimes very inconvenient, if at all possible. The end of the bar should be covered with some soft material to prevent damaging and for better holding the cloth or garment to be drawn off. The lower end of the lever H is made sufiiciently heavy to drop into a perpendicular position when the crank I is released, and this throws the bolt 0 entirely withinthe frame, so as not to be seen. An ornament, J, may be placed in the front of the stand, which will partially or entirely conceal the lever F, and thus nearly the whole of the mechanical arrangement be concealed or out of sight, that which is seen being ornamental.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The attaching or combining with a washstand or any other toilet or chamber furniture the bracket B and bolt C, when said bolt is thrown against the brackets by means of a crank or knob at or near the top of the stand, through the levers II F, or their equivalents, in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
DAVID FREED.
