UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL AUGUST PFENNING,
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,792, dated November 2, 1886. Application filed July 19, 1886. Serial No; 209,381. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: 1
-Be it known that I, CARL AUGUST PFEN- Nine, :1 subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Barmen -Rittershausen, Rhenish Prussla, Germany, have invented a new and useful lniprovement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinventicn relates to flexible-stuff shanks for buttons; and its object is a shank for but tons which shall be simple in construction and of which the several parts shall be'firml y fixed together.
This improved buttonshank is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1, 2, and 3 show in section the three parts of which my improved shank is built up; Figs. 4. and 5, the shank in various stages of manufacture; Fig. 6, the finished shank. Figs. 7 and 8 show the after process by which it may be converted into a finished button.
Like reference letters show similar parts throughout the figures.
Into a cylindrical ring, 0, of metal, the upper rim of which is bent outward, as shownin Fig. l, is introduced, in the manner shown in Fig. 4, a circular piece, Z, of stuff or cloth, which serves .for the flexible-stud shank, or that part of the button sewed to the garment. The edge of this piece of cloth is allowed to project slightly over the inclined rim of the ring a, and a circular metal cap, in, Fig. 3, provided with a downwardlyprojecting. flange, is placed over the same and said flange bent down inwardly, as shown in by which it may be Fig. 6, so as to clip-the said edge of the cloth piece I between the flange and the outwardlyprojecting rim of the ring 0, and thus hold the cloth edge securely in place. The shank is now complete, andappears as shown in section in Fig. 6.
This shank will form the basis of the finished button, which can be made as follows: The inner back piece, a, is placed as shown in Fig. 7, and a second cap, I), forminga stretcher for the cloth for the surface of the button, is then placed over the front and its flange bent down over the rim of the inner back piece, a. The surface cloth 8 is then stretched over the cap band secured behind by the outer back plate, in, which, lastly, is itself secured in place by bending outwardly over it the lower rim of the inner cylindrical ring, 0, as shown in Fig. 8.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure byLetters Patent of the United States, 1s
The shank for buttons, consisting of the cylindrical ring 0, with its upper rim bent outward, the stuff piece Z, and the flanged cap is, the whole combined substantially as described and illustrated.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specificationin the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL-AUGUST PFENNING. WVitnesses:
EDUARD KIROHNER, M. GAMMERSBAOH.
