SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,738, dated November 2, 1886.

To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SYLvEs'rER BYRNE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia-and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Polishing Machines, ot which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in knife-blade-polishing machines, in which two disk-plates revolve in directly opposite directions; and the objects of myimprovements are, iirst, to secure an increased rotary motion by having the disk which accomplishes the polishing operation'of the blade f to move in a distinct and opposite rotary direction 'from the disk-plate, in which the handles of the knives are secured; second, to affo d means for polishing more than one knife-b ade at a single operation; and, third, to. afford facilities for the proper adjustment of the knifeblades to the polishing surface, that each may receive a uniform polish. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a 'side elevation of "the entire machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line v :t of Fig. 1. In the drawings, A represents the framework of the machine centrally located, in
which is a vertical sleeve, N, secured at its top above the frame-work to a circular plate,
F. Passing entirely through said sleeve N is a shaft, E, which has secured near its top and within the body of the circular plate F a circular carrier-plate, C, having a cap-plate, c. A horizontal shaft, M, having a ily-wheel, s, at one end outside of the frame-work A, while its inner end is provided with a bevelgear,G,which'mesheswith smaller bevel-gears, H and D, is `mounted on t-he frame-work A. rlhe one marked D is secured to the sleeve N, and the one marked H is secured to the shaft E. Said horizontal shaft M is constructed with a crank, m, to which the treadle ois connected by means of the connecting rod n.
The vertical shaft E is screw-threaded, as at e, for a short distance atits top, to'receive the nut 7c, for holding the cap-plate c.
The carrier-plate C is constructed in the tangential grooves c', to receive the handles of the knives, and adjustable springs b, ar-` 'the knife-blade, when the cap-plate is forced rmlydown upon the handles ofthe knives and springs b by means of the thumb-nut lc. Motion now being imparted tothe horizontal crank-Shaft M by means of the treadle o and connecting-rod n. The bevel-gears D and H, respectively, will impart a rotary motion to the sleeveN and shaft E, but in a directly opposite direction, the result will be that a single revolution of the plate F will be met with a complete opposite revolution ofthe carrier-plate C, resulting in a high velocity of the friction-plate over the knife. Said frictional plate is constructed with a iiange, f, which serves to keep the brick-dust, einery, or similar :material used for polishing from being. vthrown otl' by the centrifugal force.
By the use of a machine such as I have described a number of knife-blades can be polishedat a single operation and much quicker than by handling singly in the usual manner, while the uniform position which each occupies in relation to the frictional surface and manner of holding them recommends it as a thoroughly practical and eihcient machine, inasmuch as each blade will receive the saine polish.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination, in a knife-polishing machine, of the carrier-plate C, having tangential grooves c', springs I), cap-plate c, thumbnut lc, and vertical shaft E, substantially as set forth. y
