GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,163, dated October 19, 1886.
Application tiled March 1, 1886.
.To aZZ 1071.011?, it may concern:
Be it known that I, SANFORD C. CLL-isn, of Boston, in the county ot` Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented an Improvement in Garment'Supporters, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of supporters which are used for gripping the edge of an article i'or the purpose of suspending it or holding it in any desired position.
These supporters are usually secured to one end of a strap or band, and the strap is so adjusted that the strain will come at right angles to the edge of the fabric or other article to which the supporter is temporarily connected.
Figure l represents a perspective view of a garment-supporter constructed according to my invention, showing the several parts of the device turned out of position, so as to permit the edge of the garment to be placed over the stud preparatory to being clasped and held therein. Fig. Zrepresentsafront side elevation ofthe same, showing the parts closed together as in use. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of the same with the loop placed over the stud and the clasp or clamp turned to one side. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section through the same with the parts in position ready for use. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section of the saine with a portion of garment clasped therein.
A represents a curved metal plate provided at the upper end with a horizontal slot or loop, through which is inserted the strap or band B, and secured by stitching, or so as to form a loop, as shown, and leave aportion of the end thereof extending below, and to this extended portion Cis secured the stud D, having a short neck or body and a head end or button, over which theloop-holder Eispassed. This loopholder E is pivoted to the rear side of the metal plate A and at one side of the central line of the same, so that when any weight is suspended from the said stud D, acting upon the strap B, it will tend to press the curved Serial No. 193,690. (No model.)
finger or clamp part F, formed on the lower end of the said plate A, under the head of the said stud and against the body portion there of, so as to clamp and hold the portion or edge of the garment placed over the head of the stud D, as shown in Fig. 5, without injury to the fabric thus clamped by the supporter.
This device is designed for fastening and attaching stocking-Suspenders to the top portion or edge of a stocking, but is equally adapted for and can be used as a suspension attachment for a variety of purposes.
It will be seen and understood that when the supporter is opened out, as shown in Fig. l, the edge or portion of the garment is to be placed over the head of the stud D, then the loop-holder Eis placed over the head ot the stud on top ot the fabric H, then a slight pull exerted upon the garment, and strap B will force the curved end F of the clamp-plate A in contact with that portion ofthe garment extending over or beyond the edge of the head of the stud, and thereby hold the same firmly in such position without injuring the fabric at the point of attachment, as shown in Fig. 5, and from which it cannot escape without being properly released, as the contacting faces ofthe said plate A and loop'holder E are provided with an indentation and projection, L, which catch together when the said parts are brought in position, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- A garment-supporter consistingof the plate A, having the curved end F, and a loop or slot at the top, the pivoted loop E, having the catch L, the strap B, having the extension C, provided with the stud D, and connected to the said plato A, as described.
