No. 351,147. Patented Oct. 19, 1886.
Irwemiow fiozerzrmw fm Z m? w 4 m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT ADAMS, OF SOUTHYVARK, COUNTY OF SURREY, ENGLAND.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING TRANSOMS, SKYLIGHTS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,147, dated October 19, 1886.
Application filed March '25, 1886. Serial No. 196,596. (No model.) Patented in England December 22, 1884, No. 16,817.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT ADAMS, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 17 Blackman street, Southwark, in the county of Surrey, England, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Opening and Closing Fan-Lights, Skylights, Ventilators, and Analogous Articles, and in the fittings and appliances in connection therewith, (for which I have obtained a patent in Great Britain, No. 16,817, dated December 22, 1884,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide novel and simple devices for opening and closing hinged skylights, fan-lights, ventilators, and analogous appliances; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is a sectional elevation showing the invention applied to a fan-light hinged at the bottom. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a variation in the arrangement of the parts, and Fig. 3 a detached view of the slotted link and pawl-and-ratchet devices shown in Fig. 1.
In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the same in detail, referring first to Figs. 1 and 3, where thelettera indicates afan-light hinged at its lower end, as at a, to the fanlight frame 0. Theletter 0 indicates a metallic Or other suitable case mortised in one edge of the fan-light and containing a shaft, f, havinga crank-arm, g, carrying a pawl, 71, which is located outside the case. To the shaft is attached an arm, (Z, having an eye, (1, for the attachment of a cord, chain, or rod, 11, so that by pulling the cord the shaft will be rocked and the pawl moved against the tension of a spring, 1, which restores the pawl to its norby a cord, chain, or rod, and the spring may be dispensed with, if desired.
In Fig. 2 the construction is the same, the arrangement being simply reversed-tha5 is, the slot If, with its closed end walls, b, and ratchet-edge b, are formed in a bracket secured to the fan-light, and thelink 11 carries the hereinbefore-described spring-pawl h, operatingshaft f, and arm (7. r
The fan-1i ght shown in Fig. 1 is readily closed by simply pushing or pulling it upward, while that shown in Fig. 2 is opened in a similar manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination, with a fan-light or analogous device, hinged as shown, of alink, b, pivoted at one end to the frame and having aslot at the other end, provided with the ratchet b and closed end walls, 12, the pawl h, for engaging the ratchet, a lever, d, for operating the pawl, and acase for the lever and pawl on the fan-light, substantially as described.
Dated this 4th day of March, 1886.
R BERT ADAMS.
