May 12, 1970 CARTON" HAVING A PLASTIC LINING MADE BY DEEP-DRAWING 1 Filed Nov. L. 1968 United States Patent O US. Cl. 229-14 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A container and method for making same having an outer sleeve with flaps closing the bottom thereof and an inner thermoplastic lining which can be deep-drawn, the flaps having a heat-scalable coating on the inside surfaces thereof to whichthe base of the plastic lining is adhered.
The present invention relates to a container comprising an outer carton sleeve and an inner lining of a plastic which can be deep-drawn. The container according to the invention is characterized in that the carton sleeve is provided at its lower margin with flaps having on their inside a heat-scalable coating which adheres to the lining.
According to the invention it is possible to start from different carton structures known per se and comprising a carton sleeve which is provided at its lower margin with closing flaps. In normal cases these flaps are locked by means of hooks and slots or by other means, such as glue or other adhesives. They are either locked to each other or to the sleeve-shaped portion proper. According to the invention they are instead locked to the lining mentioned abov Consequently, the erecting and locking of the carton sleeves is simplified and at the same time a very tight bottom structure is obtained, thanks to the lining.
The invention will be described in greater detail in the following with reference to the accompanying drawings showing an example of a preferred embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
In the drawings, FIG. 1 shows a blank for a carton sleeve forming part of a container according to the invention, said sleeve being shown in a flat, unfolded state.
FIG. 2 shows the same container in an erected folded state.
FIG. 3 shows a wafer which is meant to be fixed to the top of the container according to FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 shows a section through a corner of the container according to FIG. 2.
FIG. 5, finally, shows a mold which serves as a form for the said carton sleeve during the deep-drawing of a plastic foil in the said carton sleeve.
As is shown in FIG. 1, the blank for the carton sleeve shown as an example comprises four side-wall panels 1 to 4 and one joint panel 5. At the top, the carton blank has a longitudinal marginal panel 6 which is meant to be folded into the carton in order to reinforce its opening. At the bottom, the carton blank also has a longitudinal marginal panel 7 which is meant to be folded into the carton in the same manner. Extending from the said marginal panel 7 there are two end closing flaps 8 and 9 which are meant to be part of the bottom structure of the container.
3,51 1,428 Patented May 12, 1970 As is shown in FIG. 2, the bottom flaps 8 and 9 will lie inserted to the container in the finished structure. The finished container furthermore comprises a lining 10 hav' ing a flange 11 deep-drawn direct in the carton sleeve. The said flange has diagonally disposed wider tab portions 12. Above the flange 11 there is meant to be fixed a water of the kind shown in FIG. 3. The dimensions of this wafer are adjusted to the wider portions 12 of the flange 11. Consequently, the wafer 13 can easily be gripped at the narrower portions of the flange 11 when the wafer is to be removed.
As is shown in FIG. 4, the carton blank is provided on its inside with a thin coating of a heat-scalable lacquer or the like. Preferably, a heat-scalable vinyl lacquer is used, e.g. a copolymer of polyvinyl chloride and polyvinyl acetate. Instead of coating the carton blank on its whole inside with such a lacquer, it is suflicient to coat the inside of the flaps 8 and 9.
FIG. 5, finally, shows a mold 15 which serves as a form for the carton blank when a plastic lining 10 is deepdrawn down into it. Reference numeral 16 designates a cylindrical outer portion. The mold further comprises a bottom portion 17 having passages 18 which are preferably connected to a vacuum source. A supporting portion 19 is used as a support for the inwardly folded bottom portion. The lining 10 may be dispensed either in the form of a wafer or in the form of a web and is fixed to the top of the mold 15 by means of a fixing ring 20. The lining 10 is heat d in an arbitrary manner (not shown or described) e.g. by means of radiation heat or with hot air. The deep-drawing may take place by means of a plunger 21 or simply with the aid of vacuum if the passages 18 are connected to a vacuum source. Alternatively or as a complement, compressed air may be supplied to the top of the mold 15. This compressed air may possibly be sup plied through the plunger 21 in passages not shown.
Thus, the flaps 8 and 9 do not have to overlap each other. Instead they may lie flush with each other, or else it is possible to have a slot disposed between them. Due to its inserted position, the bottom structure is as a matter of fact not exposed to any stresses worth mentioning. If it is desirable to simplify the construction it is possible to dispense with both the upper marginal panel 6 and the lower marginal panel 7.
What is claimed is:
1. A container comprising an outer carton sleeve having independent bottom forming flaps, said flaps being provided with heat sealable coatings on the inner sides thereof and an inner deep drawn, continuous lining of thermoplastic material conforming with the interior surface of said carton sleeve and adhered to the heat sealable coatings on said independent bottom forming flaps so that said independent flaps are maintained in the bottom forming position solely by adherence to said deep drawn lining.
2. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein the inner surface of the walls of said carton sleeve are provided with a heat sealable coating to which said deep drawn lining adheres.
3. A container as claimed in claim l wherein said carton sleeve is provided with marginal panels inwardly folded about the base thereof to provide a double walled marginal flange.
4. A container as claimed in claim 1 wherein said carton sleeve is provided with two opposed overlapping bottom forming flaps.
5. A container as claimed in claim 3 wherein said carton sleeve is provided with marginal panels inwardly folded about the top thereof to provide reinforcement for the top of the container.
