Description

SPECIFICATION A paper container The present invention relates to a paper container.
In a paper container for soft drinks, it has been conventionally proposed to fold an end of the paper which is exposed to the inside of the container or to coat the end face with a coating material such as a plastics material tape so as to prevent exposure of the end face of the paper to the inside of the container. However, both methods have proven to be defective. In the former method, since the element as a whole must be folded, folding is difficult. Cracks tend to form, resulting in leakage of the contents or influx of the outside air. In the latter method, the adhered tape may be easily removed.
Further, for applying this tape, an additionai procedure is required, resulting in an increase in cost and complexity of manufacture.
In a conventional paper container, the folding of the body element end face which is exposed inside the container does not present.many problems since the shape of the container is square and the folded portion is almost straight. However, with a paper container having a cylindrical or inverted truncated conical body portion, is has been necessary to heat and melt the thermoplastic synthetic resin at the outer surface of the body portion with hot air for improving the adhesion of the body-adhering portions. This pre-heating sometimes brings the folded portion of the skived portion of the body element back to its original state. In order to overcome or at least mitigate these defects, the present invention has been proposed.
According to the first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a paper container which comprises a hollow body portion having a side wall element with a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer as the innermost layer thereof, one longitudinal end of the side wall element having been skived to substantially half its thickness for a predetermined width, a longitudinal groove formed substantially at the centre of the skived portion, the skived portion having been folded about the groove and adhered to itself, a body portion being formed by adhering both longitudinal ends of the element together while placing the folded longitudinal end inside the other longitudinal end, and a lid portion and a bottom portion of the same or similar material as that of the body element matingly attached, respectively, to the open top and bottom ends of the body portion.
According to the second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of making a paper container comprising a hollow body portion having a side wall element with a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer as the innermost layer thereof, which method comprises skiving one longitudinal end of the side wall element to substantially half its thickness for a predetermined width, forming a longitudinal groove substantially as the centre of the skived portion, folding the skived portion about the groove and adhering it to ftself,-forming the body portion by adhering both longitudinal ends of the element together while placing the folded longitudinal end inside the other longitudinal end and matingly attaching a lid portion and a bottom portion of the same or similar material as that of the body element, respectively, to the open top and bottom of the body portion.
The container generally has a body portion which is cylindrical (especiaily circular in cross-section) or is a truncated conic.
The body element of the container normally has a layered construction consisting of, from the outside; a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer, a paper layer, an adhesive layer, a metal layer, a heat-resistant adhesive layer and a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer. A lid portion and a bottom portion of the same material or similar are adhered to the top and bottom openings of the body portion.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be put into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a paper container in accordance with the present invention, Figures 2(1), 2 (11) and 2 FIJI) show partially sectional views illustrating the manufacturing procedure for the end face of the body of a container in accordance with the present invention, Figure 3 shows a transverse sectional view of a container in accordance with the present invention, Figure 4 shows an enlarged view of the portion A of Figure 3, and Figure 5 shows a vertical sectional view of a container in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, a paper container in accordance with the present invention comprises a cylindrical body portion 1, a bottom portion 3 at the lower end and a downwardly recessed lid portion 2 with an opening means 6 which, in turn, comprises a hole 5 and a seal 4. More particularly, as seen from Figure 2, one end of a body element (B) made of paper (b) is skived to substantially half its thickness over a predetermined width so as to skive the paper (b) to form a skived portion (C). A longitudinal groove (D) is formed at the centre of the skived portion (C). A heat-resistant glue such as an adhesive (f) (for example an emulsion of vinyl acetate resin or the like) is applied to the skived portion (C) which includes the groove (D), and the heat-resistant glue is irradiated with infrared rays to evaporate water contained therein. The skived portion is folded so that the end face of the skived paper (b) and the end face of the unskived portion of the element (B) contact each other. The end face of the element is thus coated with a water-proof and oil-resistant layer (E) and the element (B) is substantially uniform in thickness.
The body element whose one end is covered with the folded skived portion is rolled over a forming mandrel (not shown) so as to form a body portion 1 in such a manner that the coated end of the body element is inside the container (see Figures 2 to 4). A downwardly recessed lid 2 with the opening means comprising a hole 5 and a seal 4 is attached to the open upper end, and a bottom 3 is attached to the open lower end of the body portion 1. The element for the body portion, the lid and the bottom of the container in accordance with the present invention preferably comprises, from the outside: a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer, a paper layer, an adhesive layer, a metal layer, a heat-resistant adhesive layer and a thermoplastic synthetic resin layer.
For example, as shown in Figure 4, the layer construction is suitably, from the outside: a polyethylene layer (a), a paper layer (b), a polyethylene layer (c), an aluminium layer (d), a urethane-based two liquid type adhesive layer (d'), and a polyethylene layer (e); or a polyethylene layer (a), a paper layer (b), an acryl copolymeric bridging type heat-resistant adhesive emulsion layer (c), an aluminium layer (d), a urethene-based two liquid type adhesive layer (d'), and a polyethylene layer (e).
By utilisation of the present invention, it is possiblue to obtain the practical advantages described below: i) The end portion of the body element is folded after it has been skived to substantially half its thickness. This, therefore, does not present formation defects due to excessive thickness as compared with conventional containers in which the entire thickness of the end portion is folded or plastics material tape is applied over the end portion. This results in stability and precision in formation, as well as improved water-tightness and airtightness.
ii) The skived portion at one end of the body portion is folded after an adhesive is applied thereto or is otherwise adhered to itself. Thus, the folded portion does not return to its original state underthe great external force exerted when it is adhered to the other end and when the body portion is of a cylindrical or inverted truncated conical shape.
iii) An adhesive layer, for example a layer of urethane-based two liquid type adhesive, is applied between the innermost thermoplastic synthetic resin layer and the metal layer of the body element. Thus, the container is suitable for its intended contents and the adhesion is improved. Another heat-resistant adhesive layer of polyethylene or acryl copolymeric bringing type emulsion is laminated or coated between the paper layer and the metal layer so that the adhesion is further improved and no separation of the adhered part due to the heat generated in formation process is caused.
iv) The end face of the paper layer at the adhering portion of the body element is coated with a synthetic resin such as the polyethylene layer at the inner surface of the container. A metal foil layer such as aluminium is disposed at its inner side.
Thus, the waterproof and gas-barrier characteristics are improved.
v) When the body portion is cylindrical (straight), this container can be used in already existing automatic vending machines in which inverted truncated conical (reversely tapered) containers cannot be used. Thus, this container can be used in place of metal cans.
