PROPELLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 351,135, dated October 19, 1886.

To all 2077,07, it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALFRID Tnnonon SYLVEN, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Propeller, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists, in the construction and arrangement of paits, as will he hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a broken side elevation of the bow of a sailing-vessel, showing my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of a part of the keel with the propeller in place for action, and Fig. 3 is a detailed sectional plan view taken on the line a: .r of Fig. 1.
A represents the frame of the propeller, and B represents the screw secured upon the short shaft 0, journaled at the lower part of the frame A. The inner end of the short shaft G is formed or provided with the clutch a,to connect with a corresponding clutch, b, formed at the outer end of the shaft D, journalcd at one end in a bearing, 0, in the keel E of the vessel V, and at the other in a pillow-block, F, located within the vessel. Around the shaft D is fitted the stnffingbox G, to prevent leakage at the journal 0.
The frame A is formed or provided at its perpendicular edge with a head or T-piece, d, to fit in a socket or flanged guide, H, formed upon or attached to the keel E, for holding the propeller in position for propelling the. vessel. In this instance the socket H is formed of two flanged plates, h, bolted one upon each side of the keel, as shown in the drawings.
The propeller, when not in use, will be carried upon the deck of the vessel, and for raising and lowering it I attach to the frame A the two ropes J and K. The rope J passes from the frame A up over the pulley L, attached to the bowsprit M, thence back to'the deck. The rope K is attached to the top of the frame A, and passes through the stopplate N, thence up over the pulley O and back to the deck. The stop N is located immediately over the socket H, and a distance above it equal to the length of the T head or plate (Z, so that when the propeller is held in contact with the stop N by the rope K it will swing clear of the socket-,but be held exactly in line with the socket, so that by lowering away upon the rope K the T head or plate will enter the socket H. The clutch b of the shaft D is exactly in line with the center of the socket H, and when the clutches a b are turned parallel with the socket H, and the propeller lowered from. a point in contact with the stop N, the T-hcad will not only enter the socket-,but the socket will guide the clutch a into the clutch b, and thus connect the propeller-shaft O with the shaft D. The propeller is prevented from dropping too low by a lip, 0, formed at the bottom of the socket H. The propeller being thus in place, the shaft 1) has simply to be revolved to turn the screw B and propel the vessel, and for this purpose I provide the inner end of the shaft with the wheel P, over which passes the belt Q, which reaches up through the deck and passes over the pulley B, which may be revolved by any suitable hand or other power.
For preventing the blades of the screw when revolved from lifting the propeller in the socket H,I provide the latter with the stop-spring S, the upper end of which is adapted to spring over the upper end of the T-pieced, as shown, and thus lock the propeller in the socket, and for withdrawing this spring to permit the propeller to be lifted out of the socket and then to the deck by the ropes J K, I attach to the spring S the cord T, which reaches to the deck, so by pulling upon this cord the spring may be drawn outward to unlock the propeller.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a vessel having the vertical socket H, and the shaft D below the socket, having the couplingpieoe b, provided with a groovein vertical alignment with that of the socket, of the removable frame A, having its vertical inner edge provided with the head (1, to engage the socket H, and the horizontal propeller-shaft O in the lower end of the frame, having a propeller and a couplingpiece, a,on its inner end,provided with ahead piece in vertical alignment with the head (I,
whereby when the head (1 enters the socket H the propeller and its shaft, and a coupling the two-sections of the'eouplingwill also unite uniting the two shafts, substantially as set' and connect the shafts, substantially as set forth.
