GANG- -PLANK FOR FERRY-BOATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,663, dated March 10, 1885.
I Application filed December 4, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAWRENCE F. FRAZEE, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Gang-Plank for Ferry-Boats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved gang-plank for ferry-boats, which can be raised and lowered very easily and rapidly, and which is safe, and prevents the passengers being forced off the plank and having their lives endangered.
The invention consists in the combination, with a turning platform, of a gang-plank hinged on the platform, the platform and gang-plank having side rails, and levers being pivoted on the platform and connected by rods with the gang-plank, all as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improved gang-plank for ferry-boats lowered. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same raised.
A platform, A, is pivoted centrally on the bridge or dock B, the outer edge of the said platform being flush with the edge of the dock, and the said platform is provided with side rails G. Stops or cheek-blocks D are secured on the bridge to limit the swinging movement of the platform. The inner edge of the platform is beveled off. To the outer edge of the platform A a gang-plank, E, is pivoted to swing vertically, and is provided with side rails F. Two handle-levers, G, are pivoted to swing in the vertical plane on the platform A, at the outer edge, and are connected by connecting-rods H with the side edges of the gang-plank. A catch, J, is secured on one handle-lever, G, and a corresponding catch, K, is secured on the inner end standard of the corresponding side rail 0 of the platform A.
When the gang-plank is not in use, it is swung up into a vertical position on the outer edge of the platform A, and is lockedin position by engaging the catches J K, as shown in Fig. 2. Passengers are thus prevented from using the plank, and the raised plank shows that the boat is not made fast and cannot be boarded.
To use the gang-plank the catches J K are disengaged, and the free end of the plank is swung down upon the deck ot the ferry-boat by raising the handle-levers G.
The platform A and the gang-plank can easily be turned in either direction, so that the swinging end will be in the proper position on the vessel.
The gang-plank can be raisedl or lowered very easily and rapidly, and is perfectly safe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a ferry bridge or dock, of a turning platform on the same provided with side rails, and a gang-plank pivoted to the turning platform and provided with side rails, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with a turning platform, of a gang-plank pivoted on the same, handle'levers pivoted on the platform, connecting-rods connecting the handle-levers with the pivoted gangplank, and means for locking the gang-plank in a raised position,- substantiallyas herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the revolving platform A, having side rails G, of the gangplank E, pivoted to the said platform and having side rails F, the pivoted hand-levers G, the braces H, connected to the gang-plank and levers, and the stops J K, secured, respectively, to the hand-levers and side rails of the platform, substantially as herein shown and described.
LAVVEENCE F. FRAZEE.
