Beit known that I, MARTIN BOURKE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of `Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inBoat-Detaching Devi ces 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of the under side of the upper deck. or top of a life-boat having connected thereto the mechanism for connecting or securing the holding devices to the ends of the boat when it is desired to lower or raise it. Fig. 2 is a detail `view in section showing the holding devices connected to the end of the boat; Fig. 3, a detail view in perspective of one of the holding devices for attachment to the boat and fallrope of the davits; and Fig. 4, a. similar view of the rod, connecting-link, and lever, as a means for fastening the holding devices to the boat.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in boat-detaehing apparatus; and the object thereof is to provide means whereby the boat is quickly and readily attached or detached from the davits, which object l attain by the devices substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A repre,
sents the top or upper deckpf a life-boat, the peculiar construction of` which forms the sub- .ject of a separate patent, the ends of said top or deck having sleeves B, to receive the holding devices, hereinafter described, by which means the boat is or may be suspended above the surface of the water.
The holding devices (represented at C) are provided with eyes c at .their upper ends, for attaching thereto the fall ropes extending down from the usual davits secured to the ship, and at the lower ends of said devices are eyes Z), for connecting them to hooks on boats of the ordinary construction when it is desired to elevate them to the deck of a ship or vessel.
The sleeves B are preferably formed tapering upon their interior to conform to the taper of the devices C, so that the latter will iit snugly in the sleeves, and at the same time admit of their being readily removed. The devices C are formed with shoulders c, to prevent them from wedging themselves in the sleeves B, said shoulders resting on the upper edge of the sleeve, and forming stops to limit their descent for the above-described purpose. To further prevent the devices from binding when inserted in the sleeves, they are east with grooves cl on the-four sides, for the purpose of decreasing the surface which would come in contact with the interior ofthe sleeve, thereby lessening the friction between the two, and consequently rendering them more easily removed. After the devices C are inserted in the sleeves B they are securely fastened in place by rods D, the ends thereof passing through the sleeves and through holes e in the devices, as shown in Fig. 2, thus acting 'as bolts to lock the devices to the sleeves. These rods D are operated by a suitable handle, E,
connected to the upper end of a short pivotal rod, g, having its bearing in a cross-brace, h,
as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. This rod glias rigidly secured to its lower end a link, t, to which are pivotally connected the curved ends of levers F, the outer or opposite ends of said levers being pivoted to the ends of the bolt rods D. The curved ends of the leversI d?, as shown at k, act as cranks when the rod g is turned in either direction, and the levers, being pivotally connected to the bolt-rods and to the ends of the link, provide a very simple and practical means of operating the rods D to simultaneously lock or release the devices C.

When connecting the devices C to the sleeves B, previous to elevating the boat, and Where only one man is upon the deck, pins m are used, which are fastened to suitable chains or cords secured to the ends of the deck, said pins entering holes a in the devices C, and similar holes in an extension to the sleeves B,
as shown in Fig. 2. The person, after securf ing one of the devices in the sleeve byy means of the pin, as above described, passes to the opposite end of the boat and connects the other device in like manner. The above means are provided for the reason that it Would be difiicult to keep the devices both in proper place While the bolt-rods were operated, owing to the rocking of the boat, Without more than one person were employed to hold the devices in place With the sleeves while the boltrods were made to engage with them.
l A suitable socket or sleeve may be provided at each end of the boat'to place the pins m in when not required for use.
Having noW fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Batent, is-
l. A releasing or holding device for lifeboats, formed tapering, and having eyes upon its ends, langes upon its sides, and provided with a hole for a rod or bolt, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. rIhe combination., with a life-boat provided With movable or sliding bolt-rods and tapering sleeves at its ends, of holding and releasing devices of the form to correspond with the taper' of the sleeves,-and having iianges upon its sides, eyes upon its upper ends for attaching the fall-ropes, holes for the boltrods, and holes for a pin connected to the ends of the boat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
