ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,509,989 COMBINATION PACKAGE Yael R. Woll, Bedford, N.Y., assignor to New Directions Film 00., Inc., New York, N.Y., a corporation of New York Filed Feb. 19, 1969, Ser. No. 800,590 Int. Cl. B65d 79/00 US. Cl. 206-48 7 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A combination cigarette and match package includes a panel secured to a face of a cigarette package to define a pocket open at one end and closed at an opposite end. The confronting faces of the pocket are provided proximate its open end with striking surfaces and individually slideably separable matches are located in the pocket with their stems projecting beyond the pocket open end. The matches are separably retained in the pocket by spot gluing or by a corrugated sheet. The pocket may be located on a sleeve engaging the cigarette package.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The present invention relates generally to improvements in combination packages and it relates particularly to an improved combination cigarette and match package.
A cigarette smoker frequently finds himself with a package of cagarettes and no means for lighting them and very often, to avoid such a situation, is overburdened on his person with an excessive supply of matches as well as cigarette lighters. To obtain a lit cigarette is normally an awkward and inconvenient procedure. He must locate the cigarette package, open it, remove a cigarette and then close and return the cigarette package. Then he must find a match book, open it, separate a match, strike the match, light the cigarette, close the match book and return it.
Many expedients have been proposed to overcome the drawbacks accompanying the procedure attendant to the preparation of a cigarette for smoking but these likewise possess numerous disadvantages. It has been suggested to secure a conventional match 'book to a cigarette package and, While this assures the availability of matches with the cigarettes its use is highly inconvenient and leaves much to be desired. 1
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION It is thus a principal object of the present invention to provide an improved combination package.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved cigarette and match package.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved cigarette and match package in which a match is available together with a cigarette package without the need for a separate and detached match package.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide an improved combination cigarette and match package in which the match is easily withdrawn from the package in an ignited ready to use condition.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a combination package of the above nature characterized by its adaptability, simplicity, reliability, low cost and attractive appearance.
The above and other objects of the present invention will become apparent from a reading of the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings which illustrate preferred embodiments thereof.
3,509,989 Patented May 5, 1970 In a sense the present invention contemplates the provision of a combination comprising a cigarette package, means including a panel along a face of said package delineating a pocket provided with a transverse opening at one end thereof and having confronting inner faces, an abrasive striking surface located along one of said confronting inner faces proximate said open end and spaced from the opposite end of said pocket, and a plurality of transversely spaced longitudinally extending matches located in said pocket and having stems projecting through said open end and heads disposed between said striking surface and said pocket other end. Advantageously the panel is connected to the cigarette package along a transverse edge thereof remote from the pocket open end, and abrasive striking surfaces are provided on the confronting faces of the pocket proximate its open end. The match stems may be spot glued to a pocket face or may be housed in channels delineated by a corrugated sheet located in the pocket. The pocket may be positioned on a sleeve which engages the cigarette package.
The improved package provides, with the cigarettes, matches which are automatically ignited upon withdrawal thereof and is simple, attractive, reliable and of low cost.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a front elevational view of cigarette and match package embodying the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken along line 22 in FIG. 1;
FIG. 3 is a perspective view thereof with the pocket front panel detached along its sides and folded back;
FIG. 4 is a fragmented front elevational view of another embodiment of the present invention;
FIG. 5 is a sectional view taken along line 55 in FIG. 4;
FIG. 6 is a sectional view taken along line 6-6 in FIG. 5;
FIG. 7 is a front elevational view of still another embodiment of the present invention; and
FIG. 8 is a top plan view thereof.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring now to the drawing and particularly FIGS. 1 to 3 thereof which illustrate a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the reference numeral 10 generally designates the improved combination cigarette and match package. The combination package includes a cigarette package 11 illustrated as of conventional fliptop box construction including an open topped receptacle 12 provided with a hinged closure lid or cap 13 and formed of cardboard. It should be noted however, that the cigarette package 11 may be of any other conventional construction such as the soft wall type of package or a package including a plastic box or the like.
A rectangular panel 14 of thick paper or the like extends across the front face 16 of the receptacle body member 12 from the lower edge to a point below the top thereof. The panel 14 is formed with or secured to the bottom edge of body member 12 and preferably to the side edges as well, such as by adhesive or the like, and defines with the underlying section of front face 16 a match pocket 17 which is open at its top. Located across the inner face of the panel 14 along its upper border is an abrasive, match striking surface layer 18 of known composition. A similar abrasive striking surface 19 is located across the body member front face 16 in confrontation with the surface 18.
A plurality of transversely spaced longitudinally extending safety matches 20 are nested in the pocket 17 with the heads 21 thereof being located below striking surfaces 18* and 19 and proximate the bottom of the pocket 17 and the upper parts of the stems 22 thereof projecting above the open end of the pocket 17. Advantageously, the upper part of each match stem 22 is secured by a releasable adhesive spot 23 to body member face 16 above the open end of pocket 17 but below the top of match stem 22.
A match containing pocket 17 provided with striking surfaces as described above may be positioned on the rear face of the body member 12 as well as on the front face thereof.
In employing the improved combination package a cigarette is extracted from the opened package 11 which is then closed. The upper part of a match stem 22 is pulled slightly forward to break the adhesive spot 23 and the match is sharply withdrawn from the pocket 17'. As the match head 21 passes the upper part of the pocket 17 it traverses the abrasive surfaces 18' and 19 which may be slightly finger compressed and is thus struck to ignite the withdrawn match 20 which may be used to light the :igarette.
Another embodiment of the present invention is shown in FIGS. 4 to 6 of the drawing and differs from that described above primarily in the manner in which the matches are housed in the pockets in the cigarette package. Specifically, the improved combination package 26 includes a cigarette package 27 along the lower sections of the front and rear faces 28 of which are edge secured rectangular panels 29 which delineate with faces 28 and open topped pockets 30. The upper borders of the confronting faces of pockets 30 are provided with abrasive striking surfaces 32 corresponding to surfaces 18 and 19.
Nested in the pocket 30 and extending for substantially the full width and for part or the full height thereof is a vertically corrugated sheet 33 which delineates with the walls of pocket 30 or With webs which are cemented to the corrugated sheet 33 vertical tubular guides or channels 34. The upper parts of the channels 34 are open and exposed to the striking surfaces 32 for the full heights of the surfaces 32. The corrugated sheet 33 may advantageously terminate at a point below the striking surfaces 32.
A match 36 is housed in each of the channels 34 with the match head 37 lower-most and the upper part of the match stem, 38 projecting above the open end of the pocket 30. The use and operation of the improved combination package 26 are similar to thatof package 10 earlier described.
In FIGS. 7 and 8 of the drawing there is illustrated another embodiment of the present invention in which the match carrying pocket is separate from the cigarette package and is provided with means for attachment to the cigarette package. The improved device 39 includes a cardboard, paper or plastic sleeve 40 of rectangular transverse cross section and of dimensions permitting the snug sliding engagement of a conventional cigarette package thereby to retain the device 39 on the cigarette package. The sleeve 40 may be provided with a bottom wall 41 which may engage the bottom face of an associated cigarette package.
Panels 42 are secured along their bottom and side edges to the corresponding edges of the front and rear walls of the sleeve 40 and delineate therewith pockets 43 corresponding to pockets 17 and provided along the upper borders of their confronting faces with striking surfaces 4. 44. A plurality of transversely spaced vertical matches 4 have their head ends disposed in the bottom of pockets 43 and the upper parts of the stems thereof projecting above the open ends of the pocket 43. The matches 46 may be suitably releasably retained in the pockets 43 by spot cementing or by the use of a corrugated sheet as described above or in any other suitable manner.
In use the match pocket carrying sleeve 40* is applied to a cigaretted package to form the improved combination which is employed in the manner described above. It should be noted that the pocket carrying sleeve, as well as the pocket forming panel may carry information, copy or be decorated as desired.
While there have been described and illustrated preferred embodiments of the present invention it is apparent that numerous alterations, omissions and addithereof.
