DOOR SEGUREB.
No. 350,332. Patented Oct. 5, 1886.
Nv PETERS. mnmmnb n w, Wampum-92c U I-TED STATES AT'ENT GFFICEC JAMES E, \VHlTE, OF MADDEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,332, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed March 31, 1886.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. \VHITE, of Maiden, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion, reference being had to the accompanyin'g drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my fastener applied to a door-casing and door. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the center of the same. Fig. 3 is afront elevation illustrating the fastener in the position which it occupies when not in use. Fig. 4 is a section on the line a: w ot'Fig. 3.
My invention has for its object to provide a simple device by means of which a door can be securely fastened, and at the same time tightened, if loose, to exclude wind and rain, the said device being made adjustable to vary the pressure upon the door, according as the latter may fit more or less closely within its frame or casing; and to this end'my invention consists in a cam-lever pivoted to an arm swiveling and made adjustable 'upon. a post or support secured to the door-frame, the arm and its camlever being swung on the arm-pivot into a position in front of the door to allow the camlever to act upon and fasten "the same, the lever and its arm being adapted to drop down out of the way when the door is tobe opened, as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the said drawings, A represents a door, and B the door frame or casing, to which is secured at any desiredheight a horizontallyprojecting post or support, I), having a baseplate, I), through which pass the fasteningscrews 0; but the post D may be secured in place by any other suitable means, if preferred.
The post Dis provided with ascrew-thread, over which is turned a cap or head, G, having a corresponding screw-thread, and from this swiveling-head G projects laterally an arm, H, to the outer end of which is pivoted at d a cam-lever, I, the cam-shaped end 6 of which is adapted, when the lever is moved in the proper direction, to press upon abearing-plate, L, secured to the door A when the arm H is swung around the post D as a. center and brought into a position in frontof the door, as
Serial No. 197,847. (No model.)
seen in Figs. 1 and 2,'thussecurely fastening the door and at the same time exerting astrong pressure thereon, so that if it does not properlyfit the frame or casing it will be tight- 5 ened so as to effectuallyprevent the entrance of cold air or water. \Vhen the cam-lever is released by throwing it back, the arm H and the lever will drop down out of the wayof the door into the position seen in Fig. 3, when the door is free to be opened.
.The head G is preferably made to turn very easily upon its pivotal post D, which insures the arm H dropping automatically out of the way of the door as soon as the cam-lever is thrown back to relieve its pressure.
By turning the swiveling-head G around the screw pivot or post D, the arm H' may be adjusted toward or fromthe casing B to vary the pressure of the cam-lever I to suit the particu- 7o lar door to which the fastener is applied, thus insuring the door being always closed tightlyinto its frame, and if the door is warped out of shape, or fails to fit properly at some particular portion of its length, I prefer to apply the fastener at or near such point where the greatest p ressurcis required to produce a close fit.
The bearing-plate L is prcferabl y provided with a groove, f, for the reception of theend e of the cam-lever I, which is thus securely held in it proper central position whenin use,
and prevented from slipping down or being thrown off the plate by any sudden jar or other disturbing influence i n the event of its notbeing adjusted to press with much force upon the door.
The above-described device is easily and quickly applied, and forms a secure and reliable door-fastening, which cannot be opened 0 casing, of an arm, H, swiveling on said sup- 10c port, and the cam-lever I, pivoted to the arm H and adapted to exert a pressure upon the door to fasten and tighten the same, the arm and cam-lever being adapted to swing down out of the way when the lever is released to unfasten the door, substantially as set forth.
2. In a door-fiistener, the combination of the post D, havinga screw-thread, the arm ll, having a threaded head, G, adapted to turn or swivel upon said post, whereby its distance from the door-frame may be'adjusted, the eamlever Lpivoted to the arm H, and the bearingplate L, for receiving the pressure of the camlever, all constructed to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
