(NoModeL) W. SHRIVER 8v W. M. PEARD.A
y 'INK WELL. No. 350,325. Patented Oct. 5. 1886.
JIS
' UNITED STATES WILLIAM SHRIVER AND WILLIAM M. PEARD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENN- PATENT OFFICE.v
SYLVANIA; SAID SHRIVER 'ASSIGNOR T0 SAID PEARD.
INK-WELL.
SPECIFICATION formingpartof Letters Patent No. 350,325, dated October 5, 1886.
Application filed February 27, 1886. Serial No.'193,429. (No model.) l
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM SHRIVER and WILLIAM M. PEARD, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ink-Vells, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a vertical section of an' ink-well embodying our invention. Fig. 2 representsa bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 represents averticalsection at a right angle to Fig. 1.5 f
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists of an ink-well having its cover fitted in a desk or other support in such manner that it may be closed and opened by sliding motions, its position being below the top of the desk or support, so as not to occupy said top, and when opened is comparatively concealed.
It further consists of a stop for limiting the opening motion of the cover.
It further consists of a guard for protecting the lower part of the ink-well, the same having' means for preventing displacement of the cover, the latter also serving to prevent displacement of the well.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the top piece of a desk, or, in lieu thereof, that of an inkstand or other support for an ink-well, B, which is inserted in an opening, B', in the piece A, and sustained by the iiange on the shoulder C of said top. A portion of the bottom of the top piece, aside ofthe openingA B', is recessed, and in the opposite walls thereof are grooves D, in which is fitted thecover E of the ink-well, said grooves beginning at the under side of the piece A, extending in curved F at one side of the upper end thereof. When the guard is omitted, the lug may be secured directly to the piece A. When the ink-well is located in the opening B', the cover is inserted in the grooves D and the guard F secured to the piece A, the lug H entering the groove G. The cover may be closed or moved over the ink-well, thus preventing the entrance of dust, &c., thereinto, and moved back from the same, so that the ink-well is accessible. In the open position of the cover the upper or inner end of the groove G abuts against the lug H, thus providing a stop whereby thev opening motion of the cover is limited and displacement of the same prevented. A portion of the cover overhangs the flange or rim of the ink-well, so that the removal of the latter is prevented, and thus the cover and ink-well are Vretained in position. It will also be seen that the cover is below the top of the desk, `leaving said top unoccupied by the cover, and when the cover is opened it enters the body of the support in the recess at the side of the opening B', and is thus comparatively concealed, and prevented from being broken, injured, or removed.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An ink-well provided with a sliding cov.- er, in combination with a frame or stand having wit-hin the samea recess adapted to receive the said cover and to conceal the Sallie from view, substantially as described.
2. An ink-well with a sliding cover having grooves on the under face thereof, in combination with a support, A, having a recess and guides for the cover, and a .guard with a lug, H, substantially as described.
3. An ink-well provided with a Iflange, a
l)stand having a recess in the body of the same and an opening through which the ink-well is inserted, a shoulder on which said ink-Well n rests, and grooves in the stand,.in which the roo cover slides, a siiding cover with a groove on lug is attached, a stand having a recess, and
its under face, and a lug attached to the stand the guides ior the sliding cover, combined and ro and operating in said groove, all substantially operating substantially as described.
as described. WM. `S12-IRIVER.
5 4.. A11 ink-Well with a cover having a groove WM. M. PEARD. on the under face thereof, extending to near Witnesses: the ends, forming stops, a lug Working in said JOHN A. WIEDERSIIEIM, groove, a guard for the ink-Well, to which said A. P. GRANT.
