SKIRT-PROTECTOR.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 35,026, dated April 22, 1862.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUGINDA HUMPHREY, of Tipton, in the county of Cedar and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SkirtProtecto rs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to-the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of this invention is to protect the bottom of the skirts and dress from being wet or soiled by contact with the ground when worn in wet weather, or when they may otherwise require such protection; and itconsists of a strip of oiled silk, or muslin, or other similar material of length sufficient to extend around the lower periphery of the skirt, and of sufiicient width to double over the edge and extend upward on the inner and outer side to the necessary height for that purpose. The oiled silk, or other material used as a protector, is secured to metal loops which I prefer to make of steel, and which hook into eyelets, or are otherwise attached, on the bottom of the petticoat. It may be worn under the dress out of sight on ordinary occasions; and when desired, the wearer may tuck the bottom of her dress in a few minutes into the protector, and then vproceed over wet or muddy ground without soiling her dress, and without being compelled to carry it raised in her hands.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

Figure 1 is a View of an ordinary hooped skirt with the skirt protector of my invention attached; and Fig. 2 represents the metal loops by which the protector is secured to the petticoat.

The oiled silk a a extends around the lower periphery of the skirt, and is doubled up around the metal loops 7) to which it is attached at the edges to the points 0 and (Z of the loops.

The edges of the protector are slightly gathered to make it set close. The metal loops have hooks at one of their points 0 that hook into eyelets on the bands 0 of the petticoat.

The inner edge of the protector may be sewn to the lower hoop of the petticoat, with its outer edge supported by the metal loops; but I prefer the arrangement described, as it admits of the ready detachment of the protector when desired.
