CARPET-SWEEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 350,040, dated September 28, 1886.

Application filed June 3, 1886. Serial No. 204,040. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE J. CLINE, a citizen of the United States, resi ding at Goshen, in the county of Elkhart and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in CarpetSweepers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description oif the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or ligures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to carpetsweepers; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the case of the sweeper, which is mounted at one end on two small rollers, B B', which are arranged within the case and project slightly through slots in the bottom ofthe same. y

G designates the brushchamber, and at each side this brusli-chamber is provided with a dust-pan, one being marked I) and the other D'. Between the dustpans the revolving brush E is located, the shaft E of said brush being journaled at one end in the end of the case A, while the other end projects through a slot, F, in the transverse partition F', and is provided ou its end with a small frictionwheel, G, which is keyed to or otherwise fixed to this end of the brush-shaft. The end H of the ease A is provided on its inner face with a larger wheel, I, which is provided with au inwardly-proj ectingintegral peripheraliiange, I, the inner face of which forms a frictional bearing, I?, for the periphery of the smaller friction-wheel G. The larger wheel I is provided with a rubber tire, J, which insures the rotation of this larger wheel when the rubber tire J isA in contact with the carpet. NYhen the larger wheel I rotates, it rotates the smaller one Gr by reason of their frictioual contact, and when the latter wheel, G, is rotated it causes the brush E to rotate and perform the the handle Q.

A spring, K, secured to the outer face of the partition, bears down upon the brush-shaft and holds the smaller wheel G in y frictional contact with the peripheral flange of the larger wheel, and thereby insures the operation of the two wheels when the sweeper is moved over the carpet. The case A has two sloping cover-pieces, M M', one of which is provided with a bracket-casting, N, having a shouldered socket or seat-opening, I), for the reception ofthe casting Q at the lower end of This casting Q has a shank, R, which enters a seat or socket in the lower end of the handle, and is provided with a ferrule, which is designed to prevent the handle from splitting at this point. The lower end of the shank R is enlarged, is beveled on its lower side, as at S, and is provided on its dat upper face with a stud, T, and with a button, U, which, when turned parallel with the shank Rt, does not meet the stud T, but leaves a space, V, sufficiently large to receive the horizontal bar IV of the casting Q, and at the same time said button impinges on the bar \V and bears against it tightly, and thereby causes the hair dleto be iirmly and yet removably connected to the case A, so that the handle may be disconnected and removed at the pleasure of the operator.

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Iatent, 1s-

1. The combination, with the case having the small rollers at one end and the slotted partition near the other end, of the larger Wheel with i he inward] y-projecting peripheral flange, the brush-shaft provided with the smaller friction-wheel, and the spring vfor holding the smaller wheel in contact with the flange of the larger wheel, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the case having the casting provided with a seat-opening, of

the handle having the headed shouldered casting and the button on said casting, substantially as spccitied.
