CARPET-SWEEPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,200, dated July 19, 1892. Application filed March 4,1892- Serial No. 423,683- (No model.)

To all whom it mag concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS HENRY BEDELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids,in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet- Sweepers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in carpet-sweepers, the purpose of which is to simplify the construction and cheapen the manufacture of the same .to the end that they may be more efficient and also furnished to the user at a reduced price.

The general construction of the sweeper which I have chosen as a means of illustrating my improvements is of a common and well-known type, and hence it is not thought necessary to either illustrate or fully describe all of the parts or portions thereof. The portion to which my invention is particularly applied is fully illustrated in the drawings bymeans of two figures, both of which are vertical sections'taken transversely through the sweeper-box near one end thereof and looking toward that end.

Applying reference-letters to the drawings, A represents the box; B B, the pans pivoted to the box at b b; C, the brush-spindle, and D D the traction-Wheels. The latter are preferably furnished with rubber tires, as is now the common practice, and have a frictional engagement with a wheel or head 0 upon the spindle C to rotate the brush. All of these parts are old and are immaterial to my invention, which is applicable to all sweepers, though they may contain modifications of some or even all of these parts.

The particular portion of the sweeper to which my invention is applied is the means employed for applying a spring-pressure, first, to force the traction-wheels against the brushspindle; second, to hold the dust-pans closed or open when desired. Springs have heretofore been used for these purposes; but my invention consists in so constructing and arranging a single spring as to cause it to perform the functions of two or more of the springs used in prior sweepers. Turning again to the drawings, this spring, or rather these springs, it being preferable to use two at each end of the sweeper, are seen at E engaging at one end with the dust-pans, preferably, though not necessarily, by means of a dump-lever G, and at the other end being turned about the axles to form eyes 6', in which said axles are journaled. The arrangement of these springs is immaterial and capable of endless variation; but I find the cheapest and on the whole most satisfactory t be the one shown in the drawings, where the springs are represented as short pieces of spring-wire bent to give the necessary bearings upon the pans and the wheel-axles and also a bearing upon the box at e.

The advantages of my invention are that it makes a single spring do thework of two or three, as will be apparent from a comparison of the two figures of the drawings, one end of the spring bearing upon the wheel-axles and the other end operating the dump-lever G and through said lever the dust-pan. If desired, the bearing might be directly upon the dustpan instead of through the dump-lever; but I find it much better in the forms shown in the drawings.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, in asweeper, of a box, a brush, suitable traction-wheels, and pivoted dust-pans with a series of springs, each engaging at one end with the pans and at the other with the wheel-axles, substantially as described.

2. The combination, in a sweeper, of a box, a brush, traction-wheels, dust-pans, dump-levers pivoted to the dust-pans, and a series of springs engaging at one end with the dumplevers and at the other end with the wheelaxles and having an intermediate bearing upon the box, substantially as described.
