Description

J. AGKLEY.
NDLE.
No. 349,917. Patented Sept. 28, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. AOKLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
EXTENSION-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,917, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed June 3, 1886. Serial No. 204,099. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. AOKLEY, of Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Extension-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to extensible handles for general purposes; and it consists in the peculiar construction and adaptation of the parts comprising my invention, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved extensionhandle. Fig. 2 is a similar view drawn to onehalf scale and represented as broken into parts to indicate indefinite length. Fig. 3 is a view of the head of the handle, drawn to full scale to represent the tool-clamp; and Fig. 4 a cross-section.
Ais the main staff of the handle, which may be of suitable and convenient length. B and O are two side extension staffs or bars attached to said main staff by means of bands D E, constructed and applied so as to adapt the said side staffs to be slid along on the main staff back and forth, as may be required and at pleasure, substantially in the manner as follows: The main staffis provided with shallow grooves along two opposite sides for about two-thirds of its length, into which the afore said side staffs are fitted to rest and slide. The lower band, D. embraces all three of the staffs, and is secured to the lower ends of the said two sidestaffs. The upper band,E,likewise embraces the three staffs, but is secured to the upper end of the main staff. The two side staffs are thus capable of sliding in the aforesaid grooves in the sides of the main staff,
carrying with them the lower band, but sliding through the upper band. F is an intermediate band embracing these staffs loosely, but is provided with a set-screw, 8, whereby said band may be tightened upon the staffs, for binding them firmly together to prevent slipping, whenever desired and at any desired point between the said bands D and E. G is a crosshead uniting the top ends of the two sliding staffs, and is provided with a socket, H, for holding tools such as brooms, scrubbing-brushes, fruit-pickers, or others requiring long handles. In Fig. 3 the socket is represented as being divided and having one side hinged to open for the convenience of securing a tool therein. It is also provided with a clamping-band, I, having a thumb-screw, i,
by which the socket may be firmly fastened to the tool.
From the foregoing it will be seen that this makes a very convenient readilyadjustable long handle for any of the uses for which such handles are required, and that it is readily shortened, when not required for use, into convenient length for storage or transportation. Having described my invention, I claim The improved extension-handle, consisting of the main staff A, the two side staffs, B O, fitting and sliding in shallow grooves in sides of main staff A, and provided with bands D and E and the clamping-band F, the cross head G, having socket H, all constructed, combined, and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
