SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,862, dated September 28, 1886.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it.known that I, Isinou Sowrunuui'nrn, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improv'ements in lIeel-Iiastenings for Ladies Shoes and Boots, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved heelfastening for ladies boots and shoes, by which a strong and reliable connection of the heel with the sole and spring-Shanks is obtained, and the breaking off and detaehing ot' the heel prevented; and the invention consists of the combination, with the sole and springshank of a boot or shoe, of a heel having a Vertical perforation and fastening tongues or anchors, which are passed from the shank through said perforation and bent over the bottom of the heel, so as to connect the heel rigidly to the solo and shank, one of said tongues being cut from the body ofthe shank.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved heel-fastening for shoesl partlyin section, through the heel. Fig. 2 is a top view of the heel portion with the insole removed, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the heel with a portion of the top lift removed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In the drawings, A represents a ladys boot or shoe, B the heel of the same, and C the spring-shank,which is interposed, in the usual manner, between the sole and insole of the shoe. The heel B is made of wood or other foration, d, of the heel B.

D is formed integral with the shank by heilig 4o cut out of the body of the same, while the auxiliary tongues are made of a strip of sheet metal and passed through slots e e of the spring-shank C through the vertical perforation l of the heel to the under side of the same, where the ends of the tongues are bent outwardly and covered by the usual top lift. .lesides the tongues connecting the heel with the sole and springshanlgthe usual fasteningscrewsfare used to attach the heel to the shank and sole. The fastening-tongues D D prevent the breaking off and loss of the heel, as they establish a strong and reliable conneetion with the body ofthe heel in addition to the fastening-serewsjyl Thelastening-tongues form, so to say, anchors for the heel, by which the same is capable of resisting in a greater measure the strains exerted thereon, the tongues forming a durable and permanent heel-fastening for the shoe.

Itlavi ng thus described my invention, I claim as new and desirei o secure by Letters Patent- 'lhe combination, with a sole and springshank, of a heel having a Vertical perforation, a tongue or anchor eut from the body of the shank, and auxiliary tongues or anchors that are passed through slots of the shank, all the tongues being passed through the heel and bent over the bottom of the same, substantially as set forth.
