ANTOINE THEODORE LoRME, OF WEST HOBOKEN, NEW .iEnsEv.
EXPANSIBLE Nua- AND BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,851, dated September 28, 1886.
' Application filed June 16, 1881;. SerinlNo. 205,1l06. (No model.)
To a whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ANTOINE THEODORE LoRME, of West Hoboken, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vedg'e-Nuts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved wedge-bolt for attaching signs, sign-plates, and other articles to stone in a reliable man'- ner; and the invention consists of ascrewbolt having a threaded and conically-tapering shank, and of wedge-shaped jaws that are provided with serrations-at their outer surfaces, and with threaded inner faces, said wedge-jaws being forced outwardly in the socket-hole of the stone by the tapering shank of the screw-bolt, so as to rigidly support the sign-plates or other articles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a horizontalsection showing my improved wedge-bolt respectively in section and top view. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section ot the same on line .r .r, Fig. l, drawn on a larger scale; and Fig. 8 is a horizontal srction of my improved wedge-bolt arranged to support two plates.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A
Referring to the drawings, A represents a screw-bolt that is provided with an enlarged and nicked head, a, and a shank, b, having a tapering and screwthreaded end, 1/. The serew-boltA is retained in the socketdloles d of the stone by means of two or more wedgeshaped jaws, l; B, which are provided at their outer surfaces with rows' of serrated teeth (I, that are inclined in forward direction toward the head of the screw-bolt A. The inner surl'm-es of the jaws B B are made wedge shaped, so as to correspond to the inclination of the tapering end ll of the screw-bolt A, and screw threaded, so as to be engaged by the threaded tapering end I).
For attaching the sigirplate in position,
the bolt is passed throngluthe holes of the plate and the wedge-jaws applied, by a thin thread or otherwise, to the hind part of the tapering end b of the bolt A, so that their'diameter is less than the diameter of the sockethole d. \Vhen the sign-plate (.l and bolts A are in position on the stone, the screw-boltsA are turned, which causes the wedge-jaws? B to advance on the screw-thrcmlcd ends I), so that they are forced in outward direction until they bite rigidly in the side walls of the Sockets (1, as shown in Fig. 1.
Vhen a sign, letter, or other piece, is to be supported in addition to the sign-plate,the arrangement shown in Fig. 3 is used. case the shank b of the screw-bolt A is nicked and screw-threadcd'at its front end, and a nicked and tapering not, a, used in place of the head a, which not is screwed home into the countersunk hole of the sign-plate 0, while a second screw-nut, (F, is screwed on the outer end of the shank, so as to retain the sign, letter, orpiece O. I In this manner a wedge-[hilt for sign-plates ofother articles is obtained that can beattached to stones of all kinds without. the use of lead filling or other device, and dotached whenever required by simply unscrewing the screw-bolts and removing them,to gether with the wedge-jaws, from the socketholes of the stone.
Having thus described my in v-ention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 'l.atent- In this The combination of a screw-bolt having a v nicked head and a shank with a tapering and screw-threaded end, and wedge-jaws having exterior rows of serrations and interior th read ed faces that fit on'thetapcring end of the shank, substantially as set forth.
In tcstimohy that I claim-the fort-going as inyinvent-iou I have signed my name in pros enee of two subscribing witnesses.
'ANTOIXE THEODORE LUlUllC. Witnesses.
' PAUL (.loErEL,
MAR'II lrxru Y.
