UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES OSBORNE FREER, OF NORTH WALTON, NEW YORK.
DEVICE-FOR SUPPORTING AND PROTECTING SAP-PAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,789, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed July 15, 1886. Serial No. 208,123. (No model.)
In order that my invention may be fully' understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved supporter in operative position upon Fig. 2 is a View of the parts of the supporter detached from each other.
In the said drawings, A designates a rectangular piece of metal, which is formed with a hole, a, through which the spile or sap-spout S is inserted, and said piece A is also formed below the hole a with a hook, a, upon which the bail or body of 'a bucket or pail P is caught.
Each vertical side of the piece A is turned over, so as to form a loop, (6 and through these loops extend straight portions 1; of the sustaining-frame B. This frame B is made of a single piece of spring-wire, which continues from the sections bin the straight sections b to sect-ions b, the latter being so bent as to embrace the sides of the bucket, as shown. From the sections 1) the frame B continues upwardly in the straight sections b to form the loops If,which add to the resilient action of the frame. From the loops If the wire continues in the straight sections 0 which extendat right angles to sections 1), and which. terminate in loops If, similar in form and purpose to the loops b". From the loops I)" the wire continues in the sections b which converge toward toward each other and unite to'form the twisted loop I). The sections 1) b are turned back above and slightly oblique to the sections b A cover, 0, of metalor wood, is
inserted between the sections FF, and lies slantingly above the top of the bucket or pail.
By virtue of this construction no ice, snow,
or other foreign substance can getinto the sap in the pail, and the pail is held so securely that the wind cannot blow it down. The usual spile or spout is used to alone support the de vice, so that all nails or other fastening devices can be dispensedwith, and the device at the same time is securely supported.
- Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of a carrying-plate having a transverse opening for the spout, the
upright arms fixed to the carrying-plate, the horizontal bars connected to the arms, the yielding arms 12", arranged alongside of the horizontal bar and connected thereto, and a cover interposed between the horizontal bars and the yielding arms, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
' 2. The combination of a carrying-plate having a transverse opening for the spout, the supporting-frame B, connected to the plate and comprising the horizontal bars b and the yielding clamping-bars b formed from a single piece of wire, and a removable cover, 0, fitted between the horizontal and clamping bars and held in place thereby, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of a carryingplate, a supporting-frame, B, formed of a single piece of wireand comprising the upright arms connected to the plate, the horizontal yielding arms b, arranged at right angles to the upright arms, and the clampingarms 12 connected by the coils b with the armslf, and a cover, 0, fitted between the arms b b substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the plate A, having hole a, hook a, and bent sides a", of the frame B, having straight sections bl), convergent sections Zf', loops 1) b" I), bent ends b and the straight sections 6 b and the cover 0, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES osBonNn FREER.
