WRENCH.
SPBCII'ICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,581, dated September 21, 1886.
Application filed J ul y 7,1886. Serial No. 207,308. I (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. GETMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in nut-wrenches, the same being adapted for application to nuts of different sizes; and it consists in the detailed construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. of` my invention. is a plan view thereof, and Fig'. 3 is a detail.
In carrying' out my invention I employ a preferably malleable-iron concave lever or ,.,arm,A,which at its forward end is curved outwardly and downwardly a suitable distance, as at a, and to the end of this downward portion is cast integral therewith a nearly-square eye or bridle, B, which on its rear side is provided with an enlarged or flanged portion, a',
the purpose of which will appear farther on. To the upper rear end of this eye or bridle B is cast integral therewith an upwardly-extending projection or bracket, C, the rear portion of which is in direct alignment with the enlarged or flanged portion c of the saideye or bridle, and the forward ends of the side piecesv of this bracket C are connected by a cross-bar, b, the purpose of which will soon appear.
D is a small spring-actuated lever, which consists of a vertical and a curved portion, the outer end of the latter being provided with a attened portion, for application thereto of the thumb of the operator, and the upper end of the vertical portion of this lever is provided with suitable notches, forming corresponding shoulders or projections, cl cl, between which and in the said notches the cross-bar 11, above described, is designed to rest, the same serving as a fulcrum therefor; This lever D is provided on its lower inner end with serrations or indentations d', 4for the more secure impinging against the surface of the nut being acted upon, and upon the outer surface of the curved portion of this lever the same is provided with two corresponding over-hanging ilanges, d'2,
which extend asuitable distance over thev outer Fig. 2.
tion of the lever, through the projection orv bracket C and the enlarged or flanged portion a', and rests against the rear end of the said lever, thus holding the same 'by reason of its elasticity and bearing against the eye or bridle B in its normal forward position. From this it will be seen that the crossbar b serves as a fulcrum for the lever D, and that by depressing the outer end of the said lever the lower end thereof will be caused to retract, the enlarged or flanged portion a permitting the easy accomplishment of this result by reason of entrance thereinto of the actuating-spring.
It will be observed that I provide` in the `outer forward end of the lever Aa suitable invention above described. By making the lever or arm A concave I thereby reduce the weight of the same, as also the quantity of material.
' Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. The combination, with thelevcr or arm, the eye or bridle, and the bracket having the cross-bar, of the-lever having shoulders and serrations, and the spring actuating said lever, substantially as shown and described.
2. The lever having serrations at its lower inner end and overhanging flanges on its'outer portion, and the spring secured by said flanges, as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the eye or bridle having an enlarged or flanged portion, and the projection or bracket having the cross-bar, of
the lever fulcrumed on said cross-bar, and theV spring secured at one end to said lever and resting against its lower end, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my si gnatu rein presence of two witnesses.
HENRY XV. GETMAN.
