SPECIFICATION forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 349,407, dated September 21, 1886,

Be it known that I, HENRY RosENTHAL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of' which the following is a specication.

IzIeretofore fiat brushes-such as whitewash or paste brushes-were made by placing the upper ends of the bristles around the lower end of the handle, and then fastening them by bands passed around the upper ends of the bristles;,or they were arranged by placing the upper ends of the bristles around a core, and cementing the upper ends of the bristles together'and passing a metal band around the same, as shown in the Patent No. 327,723, granted to me ou October 6, 1885. I have found that in driving the nails through the leather and metal bands passed around the upper ends of the bristles thecement used for holding the upper ends of the bristles together is cracked, and is pressed by the metal band against the bristles and cuts them, so as to cause them to be released from the handle.

The object of my invention is to construct vthe brushes in such manner that the cement The invention consists in the combination of parts and details, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally b e pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improved brush, parts being broken out and others in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on line x x, Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 aredetail side views of the apertures or slotted cores or ferrules used in the brush.

In making the brush the upper ends of the bristles A are placed on the outside of an interior ferrule or hollow core, shaped the same as the lower end of the handle C, which is to be passed into it. The bristles, after having been placed around the ferrule B, are cement-` ed together and surrounded by an exterior metal ferrule, E, which is provided with longitudinal or transverse slots, E', or may be provided with apertures, as shown in Fig. 5, or may be made of wire-netting, the size of the ferrule being such as to adapt it to receive the bristles and the core around which they have been placed. The lower end of the haudle Gis then inserted into the interior ferrulc, and a strip, F, of leather, fabric, or other like flexible material is passed around the exterior ferrule, the lower edge of said strip projecting slightly below the lower edge of the ferrule, aud then tacks or vnails Gr are driven through the slots of the ferrule, and through the bristles into the handle C, whereby the fer-rules B and E and the strip F are held securely on the handle, as are also the upper ends of the bristles A, which are cemented together. If the exterior ferrule, E, were not provided with slots or apertures, the awl forced through said ferrule to make the` holes for the nails or tacks would cause the metal to bulge on the inner side of the ferrule, and said bulged or raised parts `of the ferrule would crack the cement and press the sharp edges of the cement against the bristles and cut the same. By providing the slots in the ferrules the nails can be driven through the 4ferrule and thecement surrounding the bristles without in any way cutting or injuring the bristles. The labor of punching the holes Athrough the ferrules by means of an awl, after the ferrule has been placed around the handle, is also avoided, and thus the cost of manufacture reduced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent- In a brush, the combination, with a handle, of an interior ferrule surrounding the handle, bristles surrounding the interior ferrule, a ferrule surrounding the bristles, and a strip or band passed around the exterior ferrule, and of tacks or nailsdriven through the band, ferrule, bristles, and core into the handle, substantially as shown and described.
